Personally, 'couse I was a Image Reader in the '90, before and after the separation of the Wildcats from the "image universe" for became a DC Division.
In the original series, into the "Wildstorm Universe", Grifter was the lone and tought survivor of the Wildcats. He had no-powers [or some very latent powers, such as a light telekinesis that require great effort] but an incredible training, into a team of high-powered super-characters, size-shifting aliens, immortal robot and teleporting cosmic-demigods!
He survive to any fight beated and bleeding, but winning. He usually work alone, going away from the team to investigate and follow tracks, and he is usually the most "grounded" of the team...drink beer, live in ugly mothel, have disastrfull relation with woman... he was the sum of many "macho/rebel heroes" of the era...
He was both the Wolverine AND the Batman of the Image/Wildstom Universe! He was awesome!
So I, and many others wildstorm fans [I think], have followed the new "post-new52" adventure of Grifter only for "loyalty", hoping to find the great old Grifter. The new Grifter is... meh... but we all still hope to have, one day, a "real" Grifter :)
