Hyperion first encountered Gladiator while aiding Quasar and several other Earth-born heroes on a mission in space. The two met and engaged each other in battle while in outer space. Both noticed the similarity of their power-sets and as each tried to use his wide array of powers to defeat the other. The two were quite evenly matched in terms of power-levels as well. Gladiator proved to have superior combat training and fighting skills, giving him an edge over and enabling him to defeat Hyperion.
