Arliss and Travis watched as their father rode out of the ranch yard, on his way north with a cattle drive.
They felt sad, but a little important, too - the ranch was their charge now...
And soon they would have another charge - a waggish mongrel with fur the yellow of corn and a heart that knew no cowardice. This was Old Yeller, hunter, highter, and most loyal of friends.
