josiah was feeling a little insulted. His first meeting with the Vine City police had been a success in some ways, but a disaster in others. The police had readily approved him for active duty in Vine City, especially after learning he had no powers (somewhat insulting in itself), but they weren't taking him too seriously. josiah had refrained from telling them anything about his past, so they assumed he was relatively new to the crime fighting game. They thought maybe he'd been a minor success in some small town and had decided to come to the big city to try his luck. The fact that he wore normal looking street clothes and no mask probably didn't help any. For all they knew, he wasn't even an actual crime fighter. 'Fine,' josiah thought, 'I don't need their confidence. It just would have made things a little easier.'
josiah was currently walking through the Pine Grove shopping mall, on his way to investigate the only case the police had told him about, a Beanie Baby pirating ring. josiah didn't even see how it was a police matter, he thought it should have been handled by lawyers, but he wasn't going to reject the only case they would give him. 'Besides,' he reminded himself, 'the people behind this probably make more in a week than the purse-snatchers and muggers I usually pick up make in their whole lives, and I'm sure they're not doing something nice with that money.'
Strolling casually into Binky's, the upscale toy store the majority of the pirated Beanie Babies were supposedly being sold from, josiah walked up to a clerk and asked to see the manager. 'I'll just have a little chat, and see what he knows,' josiah thought. Of course, the manager didn't have to tell him anything, and josiah was a little worried the conversation would end with him being escorted from the mall by security guards. “Manager's busy,” the clerk mumbled, glancing at josiah, “he asked 'not to be disturbed for any reason, whatsoever.' Is there anything I can help you with?” the clerk asked, looking like he really hoped there wasn't anything he could help josiah with. josiah muttered something about business matters and wandered around the store for a few minutes, looking at the various toys being sold. Passing the stuffed animals and looking at the presumably fake Beanie Babies, he felt apathy suddenly strike. 'Why am I doing this?' he wondered, 'I should just go home, at least there they didn't give me intellectual property infringement cases.' Leaning on a shelf, he gazed into the eyes of a little bear that was apparently named “Buckminster” and had a birthday coming up. 'But I can't go home, can I?' Standing, he looked out the window towards the mall entrance, where he could see the early evening lights of Vine City shining. 'This is my home, now.'
Checking to see if anyone was watching, josiah ducked through a door marked “Employees Only.” He walked slowly and stealthily through a stockroom, past a breakroom, and into a hallway leading to a closed door with a sign that said “Manager” on it. Creeping down the hallway, he could hear noises coming from behind the door. 'Great,' josiah thought, 'I hope he didn't want to be undisturbed because he's-' his thoughts were interrupted by a muffled scream from the office.
