Musings on the subject of characterization.
Sparrow is very concerned with honor. Part of this is his upbringing, which has heavily involved with the Yakuza, and part of this is he's experienced a lot of betrayal in his life, and has a lot of opinions on it. He's come to expect a lot of people to betray him, but he still considers it dishonorable, and it's one of the League's main bylaws. But Sparrow, for all of his cynicism, is also not a sociopath. He might not open up particularly easily, but he does have real emotional connections, and he values them. His attitude somewhat mirrors how people act at their job contrasted with how they act at home. He'd never dream of cracking jokes in the middle of a fight, or even when surveying the Monastery, but he'll relax and make fun of people when he's among friends, These days, however, he really doesn't have many friends.
A part of Sparrow that I haven't really had the chance to expand upon is his fascination with history. He has little interest in archaeological digs and the like, but he knows the name of every Raysh al'Shaytan, and remembers them for what they are remembered for. He uses weapons that are legends unto themselves, within he League, because he wants the original wielders to be remembered, and for that to cement his legacy, his legend. His power is actually somewhat ironic in that sense, because he wants to be remembered but most people can't even remember his face.
