Id say it isnt just for women. Nobody likes being reminded that they are getting older and closer to death. Id say its just those fealings are intensified for women due to harsher standards of youth and beauty placed by society.

Honestly I've only run into this problem with older people, and younger people are more likely to get offended if you get their age wrong, in my experience.

Because people say so. It's stupid if you ask me. Really, it's only older women that care. Not because they're old, but because they come from a more conservative time.
Because back a long time ago some idiot decided that being young was more important than anything else a person had to offer and saddled us with annoyance ever since. Personally I look forward to being a crotchety old man, I've been practicing for it my whole life.
Because media tells us women that aging is bad because we get white hairs, wrinkles and aging spots. The media tells us women that being old means you're no longer beautiful and that men/women will no longer see us as attractive. The media tells us that when women get old we have to get cosmetic surgeries, face lifts, body lifts, injections and use beauty products because men don't want old women. So asking a women how old she is, triggers the reminder that if she older, that she is not beautiful.

I personally don't care if someone asks how old I am. My age doesn't bother me lol
Not everyone's the same. I wouldnt mind if someone asked me that question but i would always make a lame joke forst before answering the question. Not many of my friends seem to mind either.
People keep saying its hard to understand a woman. A lot of it is because people try to add generalisation to all woman. We are all different.
