So we've just had the Oscars and it got me wondering, which films made since the year 2000 are either already considered classic films or will be within the next 10 years?

So what are the best films of the last 17 years and will they stand the test of time? Give me all of your ideas!

Napoleon Dynamite, Shrek, and Avatar are classics, too.

But what makes a movie a classic? Quality or cultural status?

@jonez_: Originally I was just curious but there's definitely some films here I'm going to watch. I've had No Country for Old Men up in my room for ages now and never gotten around to watching it.

My personal list would have been: LotR, Gladiator, Slumdog Millionaire and 12 Years a Slave.

Just a quick question, do you think any modern Tarantino films could be considered classics? I love Kill Bill but I'm not sure I could call it a classic.

No Country is in my top five favorite movies so I can't give it higher recommendation.

I think Kill Bill is a classic. It's of the best action movies of all time, honestly. And people are still talking about it 10+ years later.

His really recent work such as Django and H8 aren't classics, though.

What's your favorite Tarantino film? Mine is Jackie Brown.

@jonez_: How was Avatar a classic? The only thing good thing about that film was that it looked pretty, the acting was average, the story was rehashed, the villain was generic, the hero was generic, literally nothing but the CGI was impressive

@jonez_:

Kill Bill to be honest. The film is just too damned entertaining and full of style. I would say I hear people talk about Reservoir Dogs more than Kill Bill but obviously it's too old for this thread at least.

I was really enjoying Hateful Eight until it stopped being a "who dunnit" and turned into a giant shoot em up.

Cultural significance. Everybody has seen Avatar. Everybody remembers Avatar. Set a benchmark in the industry by being the highest grossing movie of all time.

also the video game was pretty dope

@jonez_: I don't think that makes a film a classic from a film making perspective, it wouldn't be in the same sentence as say the Godfather, or Raging Bull etc just because it grossed more than them

If you were to judge films on their cultural significance and gross alone then the Transformers films are classics as well as the Fast and Furious films

Spirited Away, Mulholland Drive, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Artist. With a little less certainty I'd say The Grand Budapest Hotel,No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and maybe even Hugo.

Will someone explain to me why so many are picking Mad Max: Fury Road. I'm not trying to discredit you, I simply want to know why. I mean, it's essentially a two hour car chase.

@mrmonster: I honestly agree with you I watched the entire thing and at the end I was pissed because I felt I wasted 2 hours of my life watching a car cash with minimal "dialogue" I put quotes because the dialogue was awful.

@stardance: Enormously successful, popular and recognizable as well as high-grossing.

Sorry but those are the things that make movies classics. Same reasons Jaws, Star Wars and Jurassic Park are classic films.

When people think classics they think films that stand the test of time, enamoring entire generations for years to come. Avatar has been largely forgotten in its 7 year existence as a 3D Gimmick remix of Ferngully and Dances with Wolves, but on another planet. Not saying its a bad movie.

@amendment50: So we're putting Avatar on the same level as those films?

Ok, The Fast and Furious franchise is enormously successful, popular, recognisable and high grossing I guess they're classics as well

And how can you say being a good film isn't a criteria for being a classic? Is this just your opinion? Because it doesn't sound verified or credible at all, it sounds like the opposite of the truth

Classic cinema is Casablanca, The Godfather, Citizen Kane etc

This is wrong and correct. Mostly wrong. Those films were successful in the box office but they're all classics because of the various achievements and stories they crafted.

1. Star Wars was a technological marvel during its time and has captivated people everywhere with its characters and lore.

2. Jaws was known for its incredible use of suspense and special FX.

3. Jurassic Park is a classic because of its FX and CGI during the time and cinematography.

Not to mention all films feature a score by John Williams

@jarlballin: There's nothing remarkable about the plot or story of any of those films, other than the fact that lots of people liked them which is my point.

If you're trying to tell me Avatar doesn't count as a classic film you probably shouldn't cite technological innovation, special effects and CGI as making films classics as that is the reason for Avatar's cultural significance too.

And this

has captivated people everywhere with its characters and lore

is just another way of saying it's popular, lol.

Anyway a film being "good" is completely subjective and there are plenty of classic films I don't like. Then again a film being a "classic" at all is also completely subjective. I'm just using common consensus here anyway.

You're all welcome to disagree with me but I'm 99% sure you guys only don't agree because you think Avatar is a bad film. (P.S: I agree with you)

I thought I'd try to list one per year from 2001 to present. These aren't necessarily my favorite films of each year, but rather films I feel had a strong and lasting cultural impact as well as being good movie-making. Of course, the newer the release, the more my choice is just a guess on how well the film holds up over time in the general public or critical conscious. Overall, these are movies that people talk about in some regard to this day.

  • 2001 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  • 2002 - Spirited Away (NA release)
  • 2003 - Finding Nemo
  • 2004 - Mean Girls
  • 2005 - Brokeback Mountain
  • 2006 - The Departed
  • 2007 - No Country for Old Men
  • 2008 - The Dark Knight
  • 2009 - UP!
  • 2010* - [tie] MacGruber / Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
  • 2011 - Bridesmaids
  • 2012** - Hunger Games
  • 2013 - Frozen
  • 2014 - Gone Girl
  • 2015 - The Martian
  • 2016 - Kubo and the Two Strings

*No standout movies for 2010 in my opinion, however two cult classics were released which gained devoted followings

**2012 was a very good year for movies and a number of other choices could have easily garnered the same spot on my list.
