Depends on who is in them, I like Clint Eastwood westerns and Tombstone is one of my favorite movies but I don't care for John wayne and Bonaza type westerns....Pirates of the Caribbean films were bad either though. I think I would wanna watch a Western before a pirate movie.....

Agree with this post, cept I liked all of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.
Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, and Unforgiven are two of the best movies ever, IMHO.

agreed, the final one was o.k but I liked it for the action and the older brother of Jack Sparrow, the keeper of the Codex....I forgot his name. He was the primest example of a Bada$$ pirate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have yet to see a Pirate movie that actually encompasses what it actually is to be a pirate, and what Pirate life was actually about. Sadly, the closest version to a real pirate film comes from the pornographic film, "Pirates". Pirate films of today tend to be more fantasy than reality, portraying Pirates as "the good guys" or "the anti-heroes", when this is simply not true. Most were murderous pillagers who would kill your family and rape your wife, just for a few extra bucks. The only film comparison I can give you is the Viking film, Pathfinder. Now, I know they're not Pirates, but both groups had the same mentality.
At this point, Pirates are a relatively new phenomenon in American culture, popularity wise. Some can debate they've been popular long before, which in some cases is true, such as the adaptation of Treasure Island back in the 40s I believe, but the amount of films based upon Western life, whether it encompasses fantasy, biographical, humor, the spaghetti western, and action, not only trumps the Pirate "genre", but the quality of film is far superior.
There are too many limits, at least at this point, with the Pirate genre due to the appeal to children, and to the fact most adults are not amused by pirate films. The things you can do are limited because of the appeal. Children can't get into a R rated biopic on Captain Kidd, adults are interested, and studios won't front the money to greenlight the film because they know it has no mass market appeal. Which, at this time, leaves Pirate films in a state a mundane purgatory. We can either watch the fantasy kiddie film, the porno, or the adaptation.
Wait 20 years, and I'm sure the genre will improve, when this generation comes into adulthood.
Lastly, when it comes to Western films, it's an American staple. When foreigners think about American history, they don't think pirates. Chicago gangsters, the Wild West, the Civil War comes to mind. There are many films based on those subjects to the point, they have their own genres.

technically Vikings were pirates because they pretty much did the same thing except alittle earlier in time.People just gave they're way of life a different name "raiders" but if you look at it in black and white it is vitually the same concept. Kill or be killed, plague the lands and seas, lust for women and slavery. Pirate is just the name for the raiders at that time...well that is the way i see it.

Vikings and Pirates have to be separated due to the fact that hundreds of years lapsed in between them, and also that the Viking culture was heavily influenced by religion. Pirates were influenced by greed and vengeance. The cultures are similar, but completely different at the same time...
Once theyve done a really good pirate movie then I know what my choice would be, the theory is much funner to me, but....yeah, PotC kind of got lame after the first movie
