Oh No! Where will people go to b!tch about Mary Jane being part black!!!
Over here. Apparently I'm silencing the masses and halting the noble "Keep Mary Jane Fully White" movement because I told them that Marvel doesn't care about their salty tears. How dare I stand in the way of their bravery.
Well shouldn't the World Wide Web be governed by...the world? As a country the U.S. and Europe have always had way more of a say in the U.N.'s power than the rest of the planet, so if more countries follow this trend they U.S. might have more power over other nations' internet than vice-versa.

Oh totally. I mean how dare we speak out about something dumb just because someone else doesn't care. No no it's more important to listen to other bitch about us bitching.
@mimisalome: Yeah the weird thing about the U.N. is that because they don't really have an executive branch they can't enforce anything. Authority really doesn't mean anything if all you can do is impose sanctions. At it's heart it's really just a gentleman's agreement between countries, but if a bunch of nations broke its rules at the same time it would all fall apart.

well personally i dont like countries like china, iran, saudi arabia, russia, dictating what i can or cannot say, can or cannot access on the internet.
I'm sure they feel the same way about us, but if all countries came together to form international guidelines and penalties for internet usage more good can be done than bad. For all I know something like this might already exist. I'm not an expert on international diplomacy or anything the U.N. does.
So what noticeable changes can I expect if this happens? No more porn and torrents?
Torrents are a given, but they'll possibly start hunting down some kinds of porn in the internet; that would include one of my favorite genres, loli/shotacon wich they have been trying to ban everywhere(even though it's completely harmless) for quite a few years by now.
Time to rev up those sad panda accounts.
But it's also worth noting that different states have different laws, so whatever rules the UN starts creating might not have any effect where you live.

Crap I don't want to pay for porn, cable, or music.
@removekebab: I see. I'll keep up to date on this.

They can probably redirect all unregistered domain name to some Chinese/Islamic propaganda site.
No they couldn't. International community = more than China and Muslim contries.

Those bastards! o:
@mimisalome: That's a lot of hypotheticals. For that fear to become true we'd have to pretend A) Real foreign diplomacy is just as interesting as Hollywood movies make it out to be. B) We don't play the game just as well if not better than those nations. C) We don't have allies who intentionally keep the votes stacked in our favor in case they need a favor from us later on.
Even if the rest of the world wanted to censor us it wouldn't be so one sided in favor of China or the Middle East's interest. The U.N. also won't be able to walk all over the country with one of the largest economies, largest military, and the most nuclear warheads. Not gonna lie though, it would be pretty funny if WWIII started because of Internet porn.

Never underestimate the power of booty.

If it isn't too much to ask for, watch this video. At least give the first 30 seconds a shot.
It explains what's going on and why this can become very, very bad for all internet users.
The only hope is that Congress stops him from doing so. Seeing as to how Congress is controlled by Republicans at the moment, I'm sure they'll try.
@mysticmedivh: Will do, thanks.
@mysticmedivh: When it comes to topics which are inherently complex and technical, maybe it's best to not get your opinions from dubious YouTube videos... especially when it's clear from their other videos that they have a certain very political leaning. Technical issues cant be determined to be true or false, good or bad, easy or hard, by using political opinions.
Also, as difficult as it might be to believe... everything that goes on in the US government is not something that Obama did. Obama is the President, which means he probably has no understanding or input as to what the NTIA does or how ICANN is run. Those decisions are made over years and with the input and advice of the Internet community, tech experts, and tech companies. I'm sure Obama had nothing to do with it. Republicans are opposing it because it's just politics to them and they generally have no clue what the hell they're doing or how anything scientific or technical works.
In this case, whether ICANN runs the Internet on their own or under US Government supervision is a complex topic. You might want to read this:

Thanks but no thanks.
You've expressed your distaste for YouTube videos. That's cool. You can dislike them. You can not watch it. I will, however.

So do news outlets and news websites. Everyone is biased. Perhaps I should take your advice and not click on your link on the basis that it's also biased and thus untrustworthy.

I did watch it. Where did I say I didnt?
I never said you did or didn't.
All I'm saying is that if you don't like them then you have the option of not watching it/ignoring it.
That's all.

Yes I do.
But you really ignored my point.
@mimisalome: you don't understand how the U.N. Works if you think that means Iran can tell you what you can access or say.
"I'm sure Obama had nothing to do with it"
This is just stupid....
those knowledgeable tech guys dont have the authority to turn over any US jurisdiction and owned facilities and infrastructure to some foreign third party.
Only the US government under the direction of Obama can do that.
If Obama is tech illiterate and never made any attempt to educate himself about the subject matter but none-the-less made an important decision based on his ignorance... then he is practically unfit for presidency.
To use your words... this is just stupid.
Obama doesnt make these types of proposals. He may ultimately approve them, but he's not the one to make them because these are complicated technical issues. It even says this explicitly in the announcement:
In March 2014, NTIA initiated the final step in the privatization of the DNS by asking ICANN to convene Internet stakeholders to develop a plan to transition NTIA’s stewardship role for the DNS to the Internet multistakeholder community. Stakeholders spent two years developing a thoughtful consensus proposal that meets the criteria we outlined in 2014 and will strengthen the multistakeholder approach, while maintaining the stability, security, and openness of the Internet that users across the globe depend on today.
Hearing and considering a single perspective on this issue (those of the stakeholders - which are pretty much foreign entities- and your so called tech peoples) while ignoring the opionions of the rest of the people who uses the internet goes to show that he is not doing his job of representing the US interests in general.
The NTIA looked at opinions from a lot of different sources. If you're going to complain that they didnt take into account the opinion of all the billions of people on the internet, then that's just an unreasonable expectation. Also, I dont think you have any clue who all the groups and individuals were who the NTIA actually talked to.
I never said that. I explicitly said that while Obama might have final approval, he's not the one who comes up with this in any way whatsoever. You have to be really ignorant of how government works to think that Obama is sitting somewhere making tech policies for the NTIA.

Then how come the Congress (which represent the American people) opinions never count? to the point that they have to introduce a bill so that their opinion of the matter could be heard?
Thank you for proving you really dont understand how government works.
