Poll Should polygamous marriage be legalized? (73 votes)
Why or why not?
@cloudguy: marrying multiple people
@jayc1324: How does polygamy desecrate the institution of marriage? If you follow an Abrahamic religon such as myself you have no reason to not view polygamy as sacred as marriage between two people. If you are an atheist then I don't see why you could find anything consenting adults do wrong. What is your problem with polygamy?
@cloudguy: marrying multiple people
Oh right ok.
I don't think making it legal is the main issue with this, It's whether or not everyone is consenting to this. Legal or not it's still a form of cheating. If everyone is consenting that's ok (I think) If not more problems can grow from it, such as emotional, physical and mental pains. This would apply to all members in that family as the husband/wife would end up having to spend most of their time other families and possibly neglecting their own.
@502reogmygmai: I do follow an Abrahamic religion but that's not where my opinion in it comes from. God never condemned polygamy outright, but in my opinion marriage is less sacred if its between more than two people. A mans wife isn't as special anymore if there are two or three or however many.
@jayc1324: So your opinion > God? And are you implying that God indirectly condemned it?
@502reogmygmai: Well he never rewarded anyone for it or seemed happy about it.
@jayc1324: when did he reward a marriage between two people in a way that he did not reward a polygamous marriage? What do you mean by he didn't seem happy about it? What are you expecting?
@mortein: vastly complicate? How,
Honestly, I don't really care whether it's legalised or not but I personally think that polygamous marriage isn't such a good idea. Still, if all adults in the marriage give their consent and have the ability to leave the marriage if they really have to then I wouldn't strongly protest against the idea.
@darling_luna: The question is, should you have the right. Do polygamous couples have a right to have their love legally recognized and to receive the priveleges that come along with a legally recognized marriage?
@darling_luna: Good luck finding guys who don't mind sharing a woman. More power to you.
@502reogmygmai: More people complicate things, if the people can figure all that out, which I can't
Then it's all good
"Legalized" marriage is just a utility anyway. There never was anything sacred about it. Nobody pretends that lawmakers are guided by the hand of God. The sacredness of a thing is a personal choice. Don't expect the legislature to reflect your notions of sacredness, regardless of their basis in organized religion.
If it can be demonstrated that polygamy is good for society, I'm all for its legalization. I'm no expert, though. I just don't think it's a question of brute morality in the sense that having two or more spouses is "just wrong."
@502reogmygmai: I'm not a polygamous nor straight ^-^
@reactor: Please provide chapter and verse. I have read both the old and new testament and I have not seen that stated or even implied anywhere.
@darling_luna: Lol, that was for @Sprior93
@darling_luna: Lol, that was for @Sprior93
Oh, well I'm a dude :)
@sprior93: I'm assuming you are a homosexual? You may be able to find men who want to share you. I was under the impression that you were a female.
In an ideal society this should be fine as long as both sides consent BUT we live in a male dominated world and if this becomes legal I see men taking multiple wives/slaves
That means most men would have 0 wives. How is it possible that most men have no wives in a male dominated society?
I think we should stop calling a societies in which a small minority of men have all the power and money, most women have all the privileges, and most men have nothing, a male dominated societies, because in those kind of societies most men do not dominate shit.
@502reogmygmai: Deuteronomy 17:17 in the Hebrew, and 1 Timothy 2:3 and 12 come to mind. Similar thoughts are repeated, though
Also, when the Bible talks about the arrangement of marriage, its in the context of it being one man and one woman. Good examples are Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:5
@reactor: Deuteronomy 17 17 was not written for all followers of christ, if you read the whole chapter tou will see that he is specifically referring to the future kings of Israel. The second two explicitly state that upon marriage the man and women are joined into one flesh, nowhere does it state that another person can't be joined into the union. In fact their are numerous holy men in the bible who took multiple wives
Sure.
Again, I don't care what two (or in this case, more), grown consenting adults do with their lives as long as no one besides them feel the negative (or not) effects.
@502reogmygmai: You asked me where in the Bible can instances of instruction for monogamy can be found, and I showed you. Nothing in the Hebrew scriptures applied to Christians as it was written for Abraham's descendants through Jacob's line.
There is also no scripture to suggest that more can be joined in that union of two becoming one. That men in the Bible practiced polygamy does not mean it was acceptable. Israelites disobeyed God's instruction like 95% of the time, and through most of their generations. They habitually practiced the common customs found in the societies around them, in contrast to the things were told to do.
Just a brief example, many generations of Israelites from both kingdoms practiced sex worship, human and child sacrifice, and were murderers, along with a slew of other things. Even good men, like King David, had a lot of wives, which was against what was commanded for Israelite kings.
And finally, the scriptures in Timothy, which are reinforced in Ephesians, still stands. God-fearing men were to have only one wife, not several
Why the hell are you discussing a bible here? I'm pretty sure both of you are living in a secular country, which means that religious believes of the majority cannot be forced upon other people, which means it doesn't matter what the bible says when it comes to laws of a secular country. If you think you religion prohibits marring multiple partners, then don't marry them, but you cannot prohibit others from doing so, unless you can demonstrate how that would be bad for the society.
@mortein: You didnt even look at the conversation, did you? Nobody is talking about forcing beliefs on someone else. The matter was brought up about it being acceptable or unacceptable in Abrahamic (specifically Christian) teachings.
We were going through more of a history discussion than a religious one.

But what has that to do with legalization of polygamy in todays secular societies ? You have went off topic.
@mortein: It's not explicitly off-topic. The topic is "should polygamy be legalized?", and we're discussing the way past societies (or rather a society) handled it before.
It's like someone asking if capital punishment should be continued, and a discussion springs on how a much older society handled crime and criminal penalties
Is nothing sacred anymore
Marriage was never sacred in the first place.
No
Is nothing sacred anymore
This
@jayc1324: why would you want more than one marriage, just cheat its easier
Yes, I want to marry as many people as possible. I want all the husbands.
BACK OFF; THEY'RE MINE.
Sure people should have the right.
And it's modelled by two biblical heavy weights.
Christ will marry the whole church that's a lot of people.
Solomon the wisest man to ever exist had 900 women.
