I've seen quite a few horror movies and none of them have really got me with the exception of Event Horizon, there is like a 4 second scene that will forever be etched into my memory. Other than that the movie wasn't scary.
@icarusflies: Noooo, keep Kayako away from me! D:
@The Stegman: Seriously?

This is the exact same thing for me. Is it the part where the main character has flashbacks of his wife committing suicide and her eyes turn big and creepy? Because that is still etched in my brain.
Scary enough that it's nolonger an entertainment? The Poughkeepsie Tape. Watch it and prepare to be paranoid for the next two weeks of your life.
Ha really?
@edamame: Some of it is based off of what in actual murders. But I don't think its a true story.
Sinister, Insidious and all of the Paranormal Activity films.
I loved Insidious.:)
Indeed. It was scary. Do you remember the scenes in which "Darth Maul" (lol) randomly appeared behind someone at the table or when you could see "Darth Maul" walking on the deck outside of the window? That was scary. lol
Did you see Sinister yet?
"Darth Maul" lol. That's all I thought about when I saw him. My brother (older than me by 3 years) screamed like a little girl when he saw him. I died laughing. The one when the guy was walking outside was even funnier because my brother screamed like a little girl and jumped up xD. It was a scary movie, yea, but all I could do was laugh at my brother lol.
Sinister... I think I have. The one with the kid that just unfolds out the box and the dad has a nosebleed in the backyard?
Child's Play, A Nightmare On Elm Street ( the original ), Friday The 13th..etc there are alot... IT.. I could go on all day.
@freddyvsjason: No offense, Child's Play is exactly that...for children. It's more laughs than screams. But, the others are great, not too scary, but great.
The Brave Little Toaster
Absolutely chilling.

Are you refering to when the crew is able to display the ship's video log? If you are...then yes, I will never forget that scene either.
@ostyo: Yes, Paranormal Activity is the only film to keep me up at night.

YES!
@the_stegman: Why did you find it so scary?

I didn't recommended it to you or anyone for that matter because I didn't want to /: They made it as real and convincing as they can possibly managed. Everything normal people wouldn't want to see explained, they explained it. It's unnecessary. I ended up having to google it to see if the tape is actually... Anyway, I wouldn't be shocked if you're convinced it's real after watching it if nobody had ever told you otherwise, or you never googled it.

YES!
I agree with this.
The Exorcist is the only film that sustained fear for me.
There are a few torture-porn type films that are squirm inducing like Hostel and The Devil's Rejects or A Serbian Film (which I couldn't finish) which are more horrific for their violence and not necessarily any true traditional "horror". But one man's trash is another man's treasure.

In ranks with the three you mentioned I would like to toss in Salo(120 Days of Sodom). While not a traditional horror film by any means it is one of the most revolting films I've ever seen. I read the text when I was in college and it was pretty gruesome. However, seeing it unfold before your eyes is brutal. It's the only film that has every made me feel physically ill. I find Salo, while less visceral than the likes of August Underground, by far the most disturbing film ever made.
@ostyo: It was so subtle and realistic, I could see it happening. I went home, and my imagination went wild. Every creak or thud make me nervous.

It sounds quite fascinating, I really do think I am going to have give it a go. Why did you find it so scary? Was it because it came across as been so vivid and real?
@the_stegman: Haha, I remember getting that type of feeling as a kid watching scary movies alone in the dark. xD

Partly because I was so upset for being tricked into believing it's real. I was really concerned and afraid for the victims. The whole movie constantly threatens the viewer with a dark cloud and that is: it can happen to ANYONE. The sick part is, I still kinda believe it could happen. And there's nothing telling me otherwise.
It's on Youtube, by the way.

Wow. I am really curious about this film now. I am sorry that you thought what you were watching was real, watching something real and fictional makes everything different. When you are actually under the impression, and have been specifically duped into thinking what you are watching is real, its not entertainment anymore. The line between fiction and reality is a very important one.
It is? Ha ha that is no surprise considering A Serbian Film was still up last time I checked.

It's more important when you're watching something like this, I think.
I just googled A Serbian Film, looks like it has a lot of kill-room scenes.

I can imagine. But then in a way the film must be made in an effective way for one to believe its true. I like it when horror films expose peoples fears. Many a time they simply expose them just to how people react to them and them simply being there.

*still shaking head furiously*
But yeah, in all seriousness, it's this specific dimension Horror movie has that made me like it so much. I can understand its charm.

Yeah. That is the kind of thing horror will always have over other genres.
