Spotify does not seem to be "getting" me since all they think I like is chiptune stuff and heavy metal and celtic instrumental stuff. They're just not getting it. They don't understand me or my angst. So we're gonna make this interactive -- recommend a band and three songs and I'll listen to them if I can find them and tell you what I think. I want something new because I'm tired of listening to the same stuff.

For convenience I'll list what I normally listen to, and their genres -- not in any particular order. Also doubles as a music list for Joy-stalkers. ^_^

  • Cake (alt rock)
  • Sublime (punk ska)
  • Sublime w/ Rome (pop ska)
  • The Hush Sound (indie pop/rock)
  • Fountains of Wayne (pop) [yes I'm embarrassed]
  • Dresden Dolls/AFP (dark cabaret)
  • Marcy Playground (alt rock)
  • Flogging Molly (celtic punk)
  • Maroon 5 (pop/funk rock) [everything after their first two albums sucks balls]
  • The Wombats (britrock)
  • Simple Plan (pop punk)
  • Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (parody punk)
  • The Aquabats (whatever The Aquabats are)
  • Garfunkel and Oates (comedy folk)
  • Tub Ring (alt)
  • Jim's Big Ego (errr... pop-jazz? I don't know, and wiki isn't giving up the goods)
  • Emilie Autumn (victoriandustrial)
  • Paul and Storm (comedy folk)
  • Abney Park (steampunk)
  • The Cog is Dead (steampunk)
  • Dr. Steel (whatever Dr. Steel is)
  • Aimee Allen (pop rock)
  • Aurelio Voltaire (dark cabaret)
  • I Fight Dragons (chiptune rock)
  • Jonathan Coulton (folk rock)
  • The Scarlet Ending (whatever The Scarlet Ending is)
  • Reel Big Fish (ska punk)
  • Alestorm (pirate metal)
  • The Vincent Black Shadow (alt rock)
  • The Dollyrots (bubblegum punk)
  • One-Eyed Doll (gothic metal)
  • Lily Allen (indie pop)
  • Cherry Poppin' Daddies (swing-rock)
  • Squirrel Nut Zippers (jazz-swing)
  • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (swing)
  • The Decemberists (indie folk)
  • Social Distortion (cowpunk)
  • Imelda May (jazzabilly)
  • The Dreadnoughts (celtic punk)
  • The Pretty Reckless (hard rock)
  • Tsunami Bomb (punk rock)
  • Insane Clown Posse (circus rap)
  • Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer (chap-hop)
  • The Distillers (punk rock)
  • Vagabond Opera (whatever Vagabond Opera is -- though ironically I dislike all of their actual opera)
  • Cancerslug (shock-punkabilly?)
  • Panic! At The Disco (baroque pop)
  • Go Betty Go (pop punk)
  • Rude City Riot (ska punk)
  • Dead Town Revival (punk-n'-roll)
  • Dance Hall Crashers (ska-rock)

Edit: Looking back on this list is slightly embarrassing but I stand by it.

Edit: Keep in mind that I'm probably not gonna like what you recommend.

Edit: When posting links to YouTube, please post actual links instead of videos, the videos lag my computer out when there are too many of them.

Edit: Current hopefuls:

@joygirl: The Pretty Recklass is a band I discovered earlier this year and immediately fell in love with. Not sure how to classify them as a genre. Grunge rock / hard rock / alternative metal at times / little bit of punk. Whatever. All I know is I love the music!

They currently have like 1.5 albums released (one studio, one EP) and will be released their 2nd studio album sometime this year (they're being vague about it, but they've released singles so...)

Anyway. I tried to pick some a wide diversity of their songs from them.

Going to Hell is their latest single released a few days ago. Make Me Wana Die is probably their hit song. Going Down and You are fan favorites and Hit Me like a Man is one of my favorites.

...also. Taylor Momsen is breathtakingly beautiful in my opinion, if that counts for anything. Seriously my celebrity crush. SO HOT, and her concert outfits are amazing. If she ever gets like a full-sleeve tattoo or something I'm going to lose it.

I'm a huge fan of female vocalists in rock/metal to begin with. They just sound so much better IMO. Other bands I would recommend (but won't spam the pages with links) are:

  • In This Moment - metal band - check out The Promise, Blood, Beast Within, Forever, Daddy's Falling Angel and their Call Me, Blondie Cover.
  • Halestorm - rock band - Lzzy Hale is an UNBELIEVABLE vocalist. Seriously one of the best singers in the last decade, no contest. Favorite songs are Dirty Work, Here's to Us and their cover of Bad Romance (and I hate the original)
  • Otep - metal band with a huge variety in their music. From their early screamo stuff, to the straight up heavy metal or even some really good vocal songs. Their last album wasn't that great imo though. Favorite songs: T.R.I.C, War Head, Confrontation, Rise Rebel Resist and Ur a Wmn Now
  • Unsun - sort of a gothic metal band from Poland. Very unique sounding music. Check out Whispers, Home and I Ceased.

Someone all ready mentioned The Distillers so I won't repeat them, great band though. If you're into some heavy death metal type music check out Arch Enemy and The Agonist.

@laflux: Nahhh, not that big into traditional metal.

@bruxae: Whew, here we go.

Crystal Castles: Creepy Vocaloid Video Game music... interesting but not something I could see myself regularly jamming to.

Covenant: Same deal here. I usually don't go for highly-atmospheric stuff (which is ironically, a lot of what I've been seeing on this page). Lead does have a cool voice though.

Lacuna Coil: This is my favorite so far I think, it has like, guitars and stuff, but I'm not digging the vocalist. *eek*

VNV Nation: Sorry, no techno for me thanks. O_O

Blue Foundation: Interesting. Tempted to like. But not really getting grabbed by it.

Gothminister: Not bad actually. Sounds like Dr. Steel was possessed by a demon. Poor Dr. Steel. O_O

@consolemaster001: Okay I've heard that on the radio before and I like it. Kind of embarrassed to like it, because liking things that you hear on the radio is laaame, but I do enjoy it nonetheless. Adding to list of hopefuls.

"Cold Blooded" is also excellent. "My Medicine" has kind of a trippy feel to it. And the music video is awesome with a guest appearance by Jenna Haze, lol.

I'm currently anxiously awaiting their album, due for release sometime "soon"

Last one I would say to check out if you haven't all ready is "Under the Water". But otherwise you've probably heard most of them by now. They don't have many songs yet as I said, only 1 studio album and 1 EP. (Though honestly, I don't consider any of their songs even slightly bad.)

Need that new album out right meow :3

Yeah. Eventually if you release enough material some of it is bound to be subpar.

The only time I had a band where I absolutely LOVED every song was Drowning Pool when they released their first album Sinner. It is a fantastic album. All of the songs are punchy and fit my fancy. It remains to this day the best album they put out and one of my all time favorites. (Their original singer died after its release :()

Otherwise...Sevendust and Arch Enemy might come close. There are obviously songs I like more than others, but I don't know that I can think of a bad one (off the top of my head, anyway). TPR fit this for the time being, but their 1.5 albums don't exactly compare to the 9 studio albums Sevendust and Arch Enemy both have each.

@fallschirmjager: I feel ya. Like I'm a huge fan of Reel Big Fish but they have entire albums that are total flops. Then again they also have like 10 albums and I have playlists of them that have like 40 songs on them so I consider 'em a win. :D
