I have recently started reading "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland and... My god is it metal.

Longships made of fingernail delivering the dead to Ragnorak, endless battles fallowed by mead heavy parties in the after life, the entire Norse Pantheon, a sea of waist high blood infested by serpents who will forever spit poison in your eyes if you are a coward or a thief, dwarfs, elves, giant and all that jazz.

So what do you guys think? I also like Greek and Egyptian mythology.

For anyone wanting to learn how metal Norse Mythology is, heres a god article:

The coolest thing about Norse mythology is Ragnarok - that the world ends with a gigantic battle between the Gods and the jætter (are they called trolls in English?) in which everybody and everything is destroyed and the world becomes nothing again. It's the only mythology I know that has such an ending. All others I know are either open-ended /infinity or Good triumphs in the end. There's something wonderfully grim about believing that in the end, everything is destroyed.

I like the Greek stuff as well, The Aeneid is super good.

The Aeneid is Roman, not Greek.

As for the highlighted part, there are plenty of mythologies that follow this dynamic. More so than the Judeo-Christian model, which is only a recent phenomenon.

Try reading some from the Indian or Mesoamerican cultures.

Hindu mythology is the most badass and epic in my opinion.

Just read the following excerpt:

Thou seest Me as Time who kills, Time who brings all to doom,

The Slayer Time, Ancient of Days, come hither to consume;

Excepting thee, of all these hosts of hostile chiefs arrayed,

There shines not one shall leave alive the battlefield! Dismayed

No longer be! Arise! obtain renown! destroy thy foes!

Fight for the kingdom waiting thee when thou hast vanquished those.

By Me they fall—not thee! the stroke of death is dealt them now,

Even as they stand thus gallantly; My instrument art thou!

Strike, strong-armed Prince! at Drona! at Bhishma strike! deal death

To Karna, Jyadratha; stay all this warlike breath!

’Tis I who bid them perish! Thou wilt but slay the slain.

Fight! they must fall, and thou must live, victor upon this plain!

Krishna; Chapter 11, verses 32–34 (Lines 201–212)

@linestar: I bought and read that book some months ago. I'd also recommend getting Gods and Myths of northern Europe as a companion to it since it deals more with the historical basis for the mythology and the religious aspects that surrounded it. It also describes how most Norse gods/myths likely developed out of Greek myths.

Some of the meso-american religions are utterly brutal too, especialy the Myan view of the end of the world and there views are a very close second to norse mythos IMO.

Still, only those who die a horrible and bloody death in battle are ever permitted into a desirable after life, anything else is for chumps. That is what i think made the Norse men and women so tough. In fact, anyone who dies of anything else (sickness, old age, natural accidents etc.) are forced to live eternity in Hel in a river of blood and snakes that constantly spit poison into your eyes, until the day of Ragnorak where they take a giant longship made of fingernails to the final battle and kill the gods themselves.

Also, just a good example of how METAL norse mythology was:

When Loki betrayed the gods, Odin punished him by slaughtering Lokis son and using his sons entrails to tie him to a rock and position a serpents head to drip poison onto his face until Ragnorak.

THAT is metal.

@linestar It still lingers on a bit in some small ways. Danes go way less to doctors than people in the other countries I lived (France, Germany), and people dislike medicine, pills doctors. Kinda like people want the body to be strong enough to live by itself, otherwise just die yo.

Well, just the thought he was the one with the biggest ass to decide his brothers' fates and bang any women he wants. Actually, I like Hades better than him. lol

If I had to rank the brothers three, I would rank them.

1. Zeus: The undisputed King of the Greek Gods. God of the Heavens. Zeus had his bad habits for sure, but no more than one would expect from the King of the Greek gods. I mean most of the Greek gods were a pack of sex crazed horn balls. Zeus was also incredibly cleaver, the reason he first became the King of Olympus in the first place was because he outwitted his brothers. After he freed his siblings from their tyrannical fathers belly, its not like they really had much room to dispute his role for leadership anyways.

2. Poseidon: The Overlord of the Seas, and Oceans. Said to only answer to Zeus, his only real rival by most accounts. Poseidon is just as big of a man-whore as Zeus is. He had many consorts.

3. Hades: The Overlord of the Underworld. God of Tartarus and of wealth. Hades might not of been a man whore like his brother Zeus was, but he did violently abduct his consort Persephone.

And i like greek, but I loath Zues. He is such a total scumbag. By far my least favorite diety in all of hstories many religions, even more so than Allah and christianies God. Zeus is such a spiteful god. I mean, i guess having absolute power dies that, but still.

I have to agree that Aztec is probably the runner up for most brutal/badass/metal religion. Read about it, its pretty crazey

Hawaiian Gods are really cool (and surprisingly overlooked).

The Hercules equivalent, Maui, managed to beat up and lasso the sun, and then make it go slower so the people could have more time to do things.

Oh, and a dozen shark gods in the pantheon are also neat.
