Poll Have you ever been homeless? (54 votes)
I'm just curious if anyone here knows what that's like.

I mean....I've been camping once or twice.
After hurricane sandy my house needed to be essentially rebuilt. So I lived in my car for a week before FEMA got me a hotel to live in for 9 months till my house was fixed. It was awful, I hated it.
@bloodblunts: That's rough, but at least you spent the majority of that time in a clean house with functional appliances. You were pretty fortunate.
Thankfully I'm (waaaaaaayyyyyy up) blessed to have a very fortunate family, financially. My dad supports us, and his income hasn't been too drastically affected by the economic issues of recent years.
I'm 14, so haven't needed to support myself yet.
@racob7: yea but it wasnt easy. It took an insane amount of paper work and phone calls, and living in a hotel is uber depressing. That week living in my car was the worst tho. Sooooo uncomfortable.
@the-seeffiss17: I'm 17 now and a junior in high school, so pretty soon I'll be independent. I'm actually looking forward to it.
@bloodblunts: Living in a hotel room actually sounds great compared to my childhood home. I wouldn't want to live in a car, but I know a guy who lives in his van by choice. He just doesn't value material things very much.
The car sucked.
The hotel was just depressing, all those months stuck in one room. And living in a van sounds terrible. I work hard af so I can have my own place and it feels great knowing that its yours.
Not to pry but do u wanna elaborate on why ur childhood home sucked cuz mine was also terrible so I gotchu bro.
@racob7: Ah, I feel you. Going to college?
EDIT: Or "Uni" idk if u live in the USA or not lol.

Google Diogenes Syndrome and look at the images.
@the-seeffiss17: I'm probably going to do Air Force followed by college. I'm looking to become a military attorney.
@racob7: ohh, sorry man. Ive seen it before, my aunt is like that and my girlfriends mom is the worst ive ever seen, needless to say she was thrilled when I asked her to move in. I bet now ur house is always clean and presentable
@racob7: oh wow, respect mah man.

Yeah.
I was regularly moving in and out of homeless shelters for around a year when I was 9.
My condolences, I hope things are better now
Yeah.

Thank you. And yeah, by comparison, things are much better currently.
@youngsoapman: Glad to know, I have one friend who lived on the streets due to an alcoholic husband and another friend who works with helping the homeless get a new start. They both tell me passive and horrific stories. But at least you said "in and out of homeless shelters" which is a comfort.
Close when I was a kid I think. Single mom with three boys, no child support etc
But I have good grandparents so I don't think it quite came to that
@referee: Your friend has my best wishes, and I hope their life is straight now. I'm thankful to say that I've never had to experience straight up living on the street. My mom and I slept in her car and showered at the YMCA before we moved into the first shelter, though I can still say that it was the worst period of time in my life until we were finally able to rent and stay in an apartment.

(sorry for my absence)
Well I'm glad your experience wasn't that rough. It scary some of the stories I've heard. But again I'm happy you got out of that dark period in your life and if you ever want to talk I'm around. Till then keep your head up and your hopes high.
Sorta. In my sophmore year of high school my mom and I lost our house due to my violent brother's actions. My mom attempted suicide and was put in a hospital for a while meanwhile my grandma and I had to move my entire life into a storage container. Little did I know, she actually burned most of our things, including everything that meant anything to my mom (photo books, etc). I lived with my grandma for a few months in a different town, and my mom lived with her mom when she was discharged. I was never on the street, unlike my aforementioned brother. He eventually went to live with my father in Portland, and came back schizophrenic. It took some time, but my mom and I finally found a 1 bedroom apartment to live in.
Yes, my mother bailed when I was 16 or so. House fell into extreme disrepair so I left. Lived with a friend for a while and that fell through. After that I had everything I owned in the trunk of my car and was without a home for about a month.
Yes, and I usually describe my experience in making a point about how interning and co-oping could help someone on this website who is currently in a college or a university; I also bring it up in the context of employment discrimination.
I was walking around with my barefeet (e.g. I did actually have shoes), plans, and God to aid me through about 5 months of homelessness; because of my degree, the Federal Government rescued me from homelessness by employing me as a chemist; the private sector would have left me there, because of unchecked institutionalized racism buffered by all of the court decisions from republican judges passed down in response to Title VII.
