I love both films but I voted for The Thing. It literally took me about a minute to decide. I will add that I don't think a film like The Thing would have been imagined as it was had Alien never came out. I think Alien heavily influenced The Thing. And why wouldn't it? Alien had came out just a few years prior and was a huge hit.
But if it were Aliens vs. The Thing it would have only taken me 1 second to decide: Aliens... Easy.
This is my first post ever! I've been reading the battles for years so I figure I may as well join. :D
Came in thinking this was about Ben Grimm...
Anyway, Alien. A strong female protagonist against the odds with an extraterrestrial monster is just my kinda movie.
The sexual overtones are a bonus too:
For King, the 'chestburster' scene from Alien, in which an infant extraterrestrial tears its way out through John Hurt's ribcage, is a classic 'gross out' moment, although Alien scriptwriter Dan O'Bannon argues that it also functions as a metaphorical dramatisation of the male fear of penetration. He says that the oral invasion of Hurt's character was 'payback' for all those horror films in which sexually vulnerable women were terrorised by rampaging male monsters. Indeed, in our documentary Alien: Evolution, filmmakers Russell Leven, Andrew Abbott and I ran split screen footage of the chestburster sequence alongside documentary film of a normal human birth with surprisingly well-matched results.

As much as I love Carpenter, Alien is better.

The Thing was really better in every way......(not that alien was a bad film, just not nearly as good)
