Lobo Hunts "Faux-Bo" in New Ongoing by Bunn & Brown

In an interview with CBR, writer Cullen Bunn (MAGNETO, SINESTRO), along with artist Reilly Brown (CABLE & DEADPOOL), chatted about their new series at DC Comics, LOBO.

The series is set to debut on October 1st, and one of the things asked of the creative team is whether or not the Lobo that appeared in Rob Liefeld's run of DEATHSTROKE would be in this new series, featuring a sleeking, more attractive Lobo, originally designed by Kenneth Rocafort.

They revealed that they refer to the Lobo from the Liefeld run as "faux-bo" and while Bunn and Brown had an original plan for this book to have both Lobos be the star of this book, ultimately, they went in a different direction:

Lobo has been hunting Faux-bo for a while now. That hunt will reach its conclusion pretty quickly. We'll be looking into why someone might steal Lobo's identity as the series progresses.

Bunn later stated that this series will give readers a good idea of who this character is and where he comes from in this new series. Lobo will be teaming up with other assassins in the beginning of this book, but the first arc is going to set up a lot about this character and highlight mysteries that will be uncovered in later issues.

According to Bunn, the books is going to be violent and brutal, which sounds like his work on MAGNETO and SINESTRO. The difference here is that Lobo will on occasion interject some humor to balance out the violence and keep it from going too dark. This is also a good fit for Brown, who worked on CABLE & DEADPOOL, which used the same method of storytelling.

LOBO hits stores on October 1st.

@dondave: Hmm, not sure what I think of that. I like the new Lobo's look, but old Lobo is classic. It feels weird thinking that the original is actually a fake.

I don't care about Lobo or Faux-bo at all. Why waste my time and money in a concept like this? And ongoing series? Pfffff this should be a miniseries or the conflict between the 2 lobos would fit better in an Arc for some cosmic book.

What is the line of thought of DC's executives to decide that Lobo, of all the great characters DC has (Specially Cyborg), is the one character that needs an ongoing series?!

There's a surprising wave of acceptance for the new Lobo. I remember the outcry when this new version of Lobo was revealed and the Lobo fanboys took up arms. From my limited knowledge of him in JLU, I don't mind him. Though I never cared for the original Lobo in the first place.

I like the new Lobo, just not as Lobo.

The original lobo looks way cooler than this one. But this one also has something special about him. Can't they just keep both of them?

So Bunn writes Sinestro and Magneto (wich are both in my pull list and are aswome), now he will write a Lobo book. He's really into anti-heroes isn't he?

Never cared about Lobo before but this could be interesting. I might give it a chance.

Such a stupid concept. So far the new Lobo has not been popular and its not like there is a spike in sales of any book he guests in.

The team making the book is solid but I will not support such a dumb concept with such a forced character. I see this lasting 8 issues maybe 12 if there lucky.

New Lobo does look good and I would like to see him hunting the old one down as long as he has a different personality. I've never liked the fact that the old Lobo was such an insanely powerful character with such a dumb personality and backstory(joke character level) and yet strongly interacted with serious DC characters sometimes.

Well...he is a joke character, he's DC's equilvant of Deadpool, he's a parody of the 90's tough guys like Wolverine. Logan smokes cigars? Lobo smokes them in space, Logan has a healing factor? Lobo can regenerate from a spec of blood.

@nahuel: Dont give up hope yet. It looks like DC is launching a TON of new books in October.\ I wouldnt be surprised to see Cyborg pop up soon. Maybe even at SDCC

Thats kinda the whole point of the popular Lobo, an over the top cliché of a character that was actually taking the piss out of Wolverine and all the other overly muscled tough guys that were drenched in gore and violence that would be pouring out the 90'ties.

Calling the original version of the character "Faux-Bo" just sounds so bitter to me. Like someone at DC editorial is angrily trying to drive a point home.

In any case, this article neglects to mention the most important detail about a Lobo comic: Is this a "Mature Readers" book? Cuz there's no point to a Lobo book that could be rated anything less than a hard R.

@lagozzino: Agreed. I think it's really lame that a character we've known forever as Lobo is now fake, too. Doesn't that seem more than a little illogical? I think Cullen Bunn has been great lately on Magneto and Sinestro, but I don't think I'll be buying this.

@noj: To be honest, I'm not hopeful... As things are with the higher ups at DC's offices and the amount of villains having ongoings right now, it wouldn't surprise me if they announce a Lex Luthor series instead of a Cyborg one.

Lobo is garbage.

If the Fake Lobo isn't around after the first Arch I'll start reading it, but I'm interested in a book where it stars fake-lobo.
