Warning: There are spoilers in this review.

On this week's episode, Fish Mooney finds out that Cobblepot is still alive and wants to "talk" to Gordon. Meanwhile, Gordon wants to take the crime bosses down, but no one will help him. Falcone sends Zsasz after Gordon. Allen and Montoya end up saving him. Maroni refuses to give back Cobblepot so Falcone's men start hitting up Maroni's gun trucks. In the end, there's a huge reveal as to what's really going on.

The big thing, for fans, with this episode is how is Zsasz going to be portrayed? Zsasz is a bit more charismatic than his version from the comic. Understandably, there's going to be some differences in the two versions, but it feels like the essence of the character was a bit lost on the television series. However, this is years before Zsasz truly becomes the man we all know, and this version is not very disturbing. I found myself hating this version of the character, at first, but after the episode wrapped up, I found Zsasz to be a very well done character. He's merely a pawn for Falcone. Something is going to change in Zsasz in the decade between this show and when Zsasz becomes the insane serial killer fans know. There's a lot of room to grow into that as well. Zsasz is used so sparingly and it works extremely well.

The fear of this show being a "villain of the week" type show is gone here. Sure, Zsasz is here, but he's not the focus. The focus is entirely on the growing tension between Maroni and Falcone and the start of their war. As far as pacing and story go, this episode was a complete home run.

I loved seeing the growing tension between Maroni and Falcone. It's been a slow build and the beginning of the gang war starts here. These scenes are just as important as what's going on with Gordon and the GCPD for the growth and evolution of Gotham and as fans know it today. Blood is shed and Penguin starts to take a leadership role. His charismatic and manipulative side comes out, along with his murderous side, and we get to see how he sets up his chessboard. Once again, Robin Lord Taylor's performance is powerful and captivating. His monologue before killing one of Maroni's men, before turning on Penguin, is powerful and delivered with excellence. By the time the big reveal comes out, Penguin becomes one of the most important characters in the series.

On the annoying side of things, Bruce Wayne is shoehorned into another episode. The whole reason it exists is so Gordon can tell Bruce that Montoya and Allen are on the Wayne murder case. It's unnecessary. It doesn't add anything to the show. The viewer doesn't need to see this scene. Looking back, it feels like nothing more than filler between scenes and just a moment for the viewer to catch their breath. As far as the whole episode goes, this was the weakest part, and the only part of the episode that can be seen as "bad."

The gun fight in the police station between Gordon, Zsasz, and Zsasz's partners was incredibly exciting and this episode doesn't go over the top with it. It builds suspense and takes the viewer along for the ride. It's a great chase, and while we all know Gordon will live on for years, that moment he gets shot is a shock and you'll be on the edge of your seat seeing how he survives.

A big part of the overall story deals with Gordon rising up against the villains of Gotham. Gordon's fight against crime and corruption in Gotham grows as Montoya and Allen join him. Eventually, Bullock is on board too, even though he feels betrayed by Gordon originally. Bullock isn't around the first half of the episode, until he comes to the realization that he's screwed either way, so he wants to do something good before getting a bullet in the head. It finally feels like Gordon has a fighting chance. This series has been great with making Gotham seem like a lost cause. This is the turning point. We're all rooting for the good guys now.

Oh god, that ending is awesome. Spoiler-mania ahead. We find out that Gordon not killing Penguin early on was all part of the plan and that Penguin working for Maroni was as well. Penguin and Falcone planned it all out and Penguin spilled the beans, back in the first episode, that Fish and Nikolai are planning on taking it all over. What a great turning point. It feels like the show is breaking away and trying to do something different. This is how you grab people into the show. What a way to end it this week.

"Penguin's Umbrella" is the best episode of the season, thus far and not just because Selina Kyle wasn't forced into it. Almost everything in this episode made sense and felt like it was moving in the right direction, minus the forced Bruce Wayne scene. The war is building and everyone is a pawn in this giant game of chess that no one is controlling. While I can't say you should jump on now, start at the beginning. Work your way through some decent and mediocre episodes to get to this point, it's worth it. Gotham is still surpassing my expectations; however, I don't always have the most faith in comic book television shows.

SHE CALLED HIM MR. F.

Could just be a little nod at Harley or something more, but I doubt it's nothing.

These people love cramming reminders of character's future personas in your head.

I was surprised that the guy who played Kyle Nimbus aka the Mist in the Flash was also playing Zsasz in this weeks Gotham. Two DC villains played by the same actor this year?

Everything dealing with Penguin is fantastic. The twist at the end was excellent. A lot of potential for great things in this show, I just keep hoping they trim some of the fat(Bruce and Selina) going forward.

Finally, they stop with the campy tone and lame villains and focus on the mob! Best episode of the season. Now, if only they would keep this tone.

Best episode of the season so far! Some intense scenes and awesome twist at the end! Love the mob involvement. I hope Falcone stays one step ahead of everybody, I was worried they were making him look incompetent.....and while that still may happen (I hope not).....the ending revealed he has everything under control.

Loved it!

I loved this episode. The Penguin is so awesome. I would be totally fine if the entire show was about his rise to the top of crime in Gotham and they relegated the rest of the characters to the background. This is the first episode that I feel like truly deserved a 5 star rating. Most episodes have been sitting at a 3 for me but letting Robin Lord Taylor be the focus was brilliant here. Only minus for this episode is how dumb Barbara is. She has been somewhat of a non-character so far but in this episode her only real moment was making a really stupid decision. Ultimately, Jim and Harvey are probably alive because of it but taking her actions on their own merit really makes it hard for me to like her as a character.

Another great episode form the best DC tv show. It's crazy how afraid the Gotham police are of the criminals in the city and they just ditched Gordon to die. That ending was nice. Everyone on the show is doing great with their roles.

What a great episode. Damn.

The part with Bruce was a little filler-y but overall I was fine with it since we got to see Alfred get the better of Crispus Allen. It's also good to see the air cleared with Crispus and Montoya, as well as Bullock, since Gordon was in dire need of allies.

Penguin is captivating as always. In fact this episode may have been his best performance yet. And I love that the show is not afraid to pull surprises and twists, that ending was great.

Also loved the action in this episode. Gordon pulled a few slick moves in the early parts of the episode and that was great, but just as good was the realism in the scene at the police station. I liked that Gordon isn't just some invulnerable action hero here. He's unkillable but he's not untouchable.

Finally, Zsasz. He's clearly not the character we know but the seeds are there. The actor did a good job with what he got. And Zsasz is visibly disappointed near the end when Falcone lets Gordon and Bullock live, so we can see that he does enjoy killing. There are also a few hints throughout that he's a bit of a sadist. It'd be interesting to see if we see his evolution in this show or if it will be relegated to the 'inbetween' years, assuming that the show doesn't go on for ten years or so.

Weakest part of the episode; Barbara. She never does anything in the show other than get emotional or seem helpless or distraught in some way, and it's really grinding my gears.

@dondave: @syncig: @wardishy: Barbara is the typical "clueless wife". The woman who doesn't know what her husband is trying to accomplish, so she keeps getting in the way, tv is full of them. Skylar from Breaking Bad, Laurie from Walking Dead, Rita from Dexter, etc.

Oh, and btw, if I had to rate all comic shows;

1.Walking Dead

2.Arrow

3.Flash

4.Gotham

5.Constantine

6.AoS.

Pretty good episode, but i'm getting tired about how they keep forcing Bruce into every episode anyway they can. This show is supposed to be about Gordon, right?? We don't need Bruce to drop very obvious clues about his future every 10 seconds. This show would be a lot better if Bruce simply wasnt in it.

I'm still getting a lot of unintentional laughs from the dialogue, especially Fish's.

Also, Barbara Gordon is officially the most annoying character in the current wave of comic-based television.

I still enjoyed the episode though.

And since everyone is doing it, the real answer is;

Walking Dead >>> AoS = The Flash > Arrow > Gotham = Constantine

...So far at least. If you can push past those first dozen episodes or so, Agents of SHIELD gets exponentially better..

If the show is intentionally trying to get the audience to not like barbara, they are doing an awesome job. She has been growing on my nerves for quite some time now. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse so i will just say, good grief with Bruce!

Those gripes aside, Gotham is one of the best shows out right now.

I have an example of 2 Jim Gordons:

Jim Gordon 1 moved to Gotham with his family, his wife and 2 kids. He struggled to take care of his family on a crappy cop salary while avoiding (sometimes with great difficulty) the temptations of the most corrupt city in America. Despite being the good guy, he still has his downfalls... his son is a psychopath, and his marriage falls apart.

Jim Gordon 2 is a hot young detective of the GCPD dating a rich, ex-lesbian pothead, living in a swanky huge apartment. Despite all her secrets, Jim has to stay on the straight and narrow or else she might just dump him!

Its lame TV-oriented re-imaginings like that the keep me and my friends out of Gotham. If you think Jim Gordon 2 comes anywhere close to being Jim Gordon 1, then you don't understand who or what the Jim Gordon character represents in the first place.

Gotham is the new Smallville, and that's neither meant as an insult or compliment.

Barbara Kean is in cohoots with Falcone (possibly his daughter) or somebody worse that hasn't been introduced yet. Nobody is this dumb. Write it down. I'll have all my "told ya so's" ready and waiting.

"It's 8:54 and I know there's someone I haven't spoken to this episode...Eureka! Next stop...Wayne Manor!"

Best episode so far. I'm very happy that they finally dropped the villain of the week bull and actually decided to be a show. ENOUGH of CSI: Gotham! Hopefully this weeks turned corner will be permanent.

I wonder if they will have Zsasz lose all his money at Penguin's Casino once Oswald makes it to the top?

Spectre's first stop will be putting non-Alfred in an armbar.

This episode was the biggest let-down so far. The cliffhanger from last week had me anticipating what would happen this week, which is a first for the show, but the ending was so lazy! The entire criminal underworld is after our 2 main characters and the whole thing culminates with Falcone essentially saying "I like you, but get out of my office." Everything is exactly as it was before the end of the first episode for Jim and Bullock with the wave of a hand. I suffered through seven episodes of this show for basically nothing to happen. All of this for the sake of the secondary characters, who are really the worst part of the show.

@thomaselliot:

"Jim Gordon 2" is the audience pov character. We are supposed to be seeing Gotham through the eyes of the determined and hopeful "hot young detective". If "Jim Gordon 1" were the protagonist, it would not only take away some of the need for Bullock's character, it would infuse the show with unnecessary baggage. The show doesn't need a middle-aged Jim and Barbara with James Jr. and Babs in tow. It's about Gotham right after the Wayne murders; as such, middle-aged Gordon with all that baggage isn't relatable to the target demo.
