Early Modern Era for me. 1988-1996 were gold for comic books.

Yeah, the silver age gets credit for bringing these heroes out, but its the the modern day writing and art that's made these characters stay around and out sell the silver age like 2 to 1. Not to mention, hollywood and the rest of the world now pushing these heroes into the lame light. All that comes for the Modern era... you'll ever seen a silver age Robin on screen with little man panties son...

when the coolest moments of a character are when according to various writers "he was bad written" (Emerald Twiilight, Zero Hour, etc) you have a problem

The Silver Age was the best it was the boom of comics and it was all censored so kids (me too) could read them and it was much simpler no wars, no space/time continuums just plain old stories and great writing (ad in my opinion the best art).

@king_saturn: It;s only "amazing" because of computer touch-ups. The SIlver Age had the best "pure" art than all the other Ages. And it was simpler back then now it's all about space, invasions, wars, time changes. It was awesome back then and I wish the comics now would go back to be like back then.

@sunman: Marvel have been around since the Golden Age too, and they got big in the Silver Age, which is when they officially became "Marvel Comics". Much like DC they had a different name originally but they've been around since the 30's and changed their name to reflect a line of comics they produced. So if you genuinely meant Marvel, your post is still incorrect.

EDIT: Apologies... Just saw the original post wasn't yours. Although the point remains they can't be referring to Marvel. Probably one of the smaller independent companies.

They quoted aztek_the_lost which definitely means they (Aztek) was referring to Vertigo, heh heh. ^_^.

@sc: figured as much. I was gonna guess Vertigo or Image, but I wasn't sure and there's a few to choose from so figured I'd just leave it vague.

Modern Age. Silver Age and Gold Age are too wacky for me.

Also, Superman was wanked way too hard back then. He's my favorite, but he doesn't need to go around sneezing solar systems out of existence while breaking infinity because he's flying too fast. I think benching the Earth and living (but get knocked out cold by) a supernova is about as powerful as he should ever be - the guy's mortal. If Thor wants to do something stupid, that's fine. He's a god. Not a sun-amped alien.

Golden Age was just that....the golden age...the start of it all. For the person that talked about sales...no age outsold the Golden Age. Titles like The Adventures of Captain Marvel, Crime Does Not Pay, Superman, Batman, Daredevil, etc. sold more in one month than most titles sell in a year now. The whole idea of superheroes was born, and there was plenty of other comic book genres as well.

Silver Age was a rebirth, and a re-working of the super hero genre especially in titles produced by Marvel.

Modern Age was a maturing....prices went up meaning the stories and characters had to be focused more towards the people with the money to buy them....adults.

Each age has something to offer....but if you look at modern comics...most of the best selling characters came out of the silver age...either being created then...or modernized then. Even the characters who didn't come from the silver age, the majority either came from the extension of it, the "Bronze Age"...or spun off of silver age titles.

With that in mind...my vote would be for the Silver Age....because it's effects are still being felt, and that will most likely never stop. Honestly the same could be said for the Golden Age, except for the fact that it was completely rebooted...with only Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman really coming through with very little changes due to their titles being continuous. So I'd still go with the Silver Age.

  • The Golden Age and Silver Age by far...That was the era that defined comics, way before they got edgy and quote on quote mature and sophistacated...Dont get me wrong i love the modern age and appreciate how it evolved the genre but to me The Golden Age and Silver Age is when comics where truly comics..Silly morality tales with grownup undertones.
