Poll X Men: First Class vs Captain America: The Winter Soldier (122 votes)

First Class 33%
The Winter Soldier 67%
No Caption Provided

Both with some political and war background, both with touches of spy films, both scored by Henry Jackman...

I feel like a majority is going to pick Winter Soldier, but anyway

Which film do you liked more?

The Winter Soldier by far.

First Class is good, unique in it's setting, great acting from McAvoy and Fassbender, but the pacing was undercooked and it was often boring as a result of it. The Winter Soldier had a strong story and great pacing.

Cap. WS.

Both are amazing movies.

People consider First Class amazing? That's a stretch. I'd love to hear why, though.

I can agree with this, even though I do think TWS' second half lost some momentum, it's still a fantastic film.

@saint_samantha:

Like you said, McAvoy and Fassbender were excellent. The development and destruction of their relationship was a joy to watch. The campy 60s setting and aesthetic(clothing, music, Cold War etc.) were refreshing. The film had compelling themes like equality, human rights and social change. The pacing was competent and kept me engaged throughout.

The most important thing to me is emotion. If I don't feel anything, then what's the point? Winter Soldier is arguably the tighter, better composed film, but I wasn't as invested in the story and characters.

A lot of good movies lost their momentum by the second half: Straight Outta Compton, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Iron Man are all examples. But it only really hurts the movie drastically for me when the structure falls apart as a result of this loss in momentum. Zodiac is an example of a good movie that got jumbled by the second half because of it's loss of momentum.

The Winter Soldier isn't like that. It's consistently well made. Great movie.

I agree with you in that respect. As much as I think The Winter Soldier is a well made, well composed film, that's mostly for it's action sequences, themes, character development of Steve Rogers and The Winter Soldier, spy tone. I mean, it's up there with Marvel's The Avengers as the best MCU film. But I still don't find it investing for some reason. I thought I was the only one.

It reminds me of The Godfather. Great lighting. Great dialogue. Great character development. But I was watching events unfold as opposed to being attached to those events.

But X-Men: First Class could've used by cutting back on the mutant training segments, and by not casting J Law as Raven. I get you need those scenes to some extent, but they dragged the film.

Agreed, it's consistently great throughout the second half, but the first half is obviously built like a political thriller, which is an element the film abandons too soon for me, it should have kept that edge that all great political thrillers, that really drives the audience through the movie with the sense of paranoia and urgency, usually right until the tail-end of the film. The first half really has that, but after the Fury reveal, it is practically gone and there's another 40 minutes of straight superheroing to go. One could say that it's a good thing, films like 'From Dusk till Dawn' completely shift gears half way through and it works phenomenally well, but I think that pulling that thread to the very end would have made TWS a better movie.

I'm not bashing it, it's still a great film, in a different league than First Class for me.

First Class was a fantastic soap opera compared to TWS. I enjoyed purely as a movie, not as a cbm.

However since both of these films fall under cbm territory I give the edge to TWS.

X Men is imo a better film. Better pacing, it has humor, action, badass scenes, emotional scenes, an awesome cameo .

The only scene I really love from WS is the highway battle, rather than that, First Class feels like more complete film to me

  • Both were amazing films..But i personally liked First Class a lot more.
  • And that final scene between Magneto and Charles on the beach against those oncoming War Ships was breathtaking and heart wrenching.

Both are great, but I gotta go with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That's one of the Top 5 MCU movies for me. Maybe even Top 3.

The X-Men interest me more than Captain America does, so that's obviously part of the reason.

This is actually really close for me to be honest. First Class is my favourite X-Men film (I despise time travel so that rules out DoFP, but Fassbender is too good so not X2), but the lack of Wolverine in it makes me lean to Winter Soldier.

Winter Soldier by a small margin.

First Class was awesome, finally an X-Men film without Wolverine on the center stage.
