Would DC flop if they dropped Batman and Superman
Yes, DC would flop if they dropped Batman and Superman. That would tantamount to them committing suicide.
They would still sell well. They have so many great characters, these two aren't a big loss. All it would mean is they can put focus onto other characters that are often ignored.

It would be the equivalent of Disney saying they didn't need Mickey Mouse anymore.
Or Nintendo announcing no more Mario or Zelda games.

The second was absolutely. But Disney hasn't really needed Mickey for a while have they?
And yes DC would definitely flop if they dropped those two. Not to hijack the thread, but are there two characters that, if Marvel dropped, they would flop as well? Spider-Man and Wolverine maybe?

I agree they have some great characters that are often ignored, but I don't think Batman and Superman fans are just going to shrug their shoulders and say, "No big deal, I'll just read these random characters instead of my two facorite characters I've been reading since I was 10." There is a reason they are often ignored, they will not ever sell like these two. No comic character will ever sell like these two, no matter who the publisher is.
DC is not like Marvel. Marvel has tons of characters that people like. If one is dropped, there is about 50 more characters close in popularity, so it's not going to kill them. DC has the two biggest names in comics, outside of that, it's a huge drop in popularity. Wonder Woman and Flash are the next two biggest names, but they are about 100 times less popular then Supes and Batman. Every character from every publisher is at least 100 times less popular then Supes and Batman.
Although I'd be far more dismayed at the loss of Superman from DC, if Batman were the only one DC lost, it'd be game over for DC. Both Superman and Batman being dropped from DC would be tantamount to DC digging their own grave and chucking themselves into it. Marvel would suffer if they lost Spider-Man or Wolverine or Iron Man but they have many other well known characters to replace them in popularity and status.
I think they could still operate as a company, but overall sales would probably be considerably lower.
I wonder which characters would get multiple titles in that situation.

Green Lanterns probably.
Justice League could work too.
Instead of giving multiple books DC could use the cast of characters they have forgotten like Metal Men, Doom Patrol etc.
I don't think so.
Yes they are the biggest franchises but DC has so much characters they can exploit.
We might get a good book that doesn't include Supes or Bats for a change.
it would be a considerable loss, but there are plenty of detectives and kryptonians around.
I would imagine if you lost those characters you would love their universes. Like kryptonians. I guess that depends on what the OP means by drop.
@dernman: fine. use icon then. same thing.

I bet Martian Manhunter could easily become the face of DC, if that ever happened.
Nah, Flash.
He's superhuman, but he's still human. And appeals to way more people, hell Martian Manhunter hasn't even got his own series yet.
They'd survive, but probably wouldn't be a major player anymore.
Even without Superman and Batman they still have higher numbers of known characters than most of the Indie companies.
Also Green Lantern is actually doing very well these days, often top 20 in monthly sales I believe
They have other comics that would still sell, but no company that drops their two biggest icons is going to be doing as well after the fact. You may as well have asked if Apple would still be a major competitor if they announced they're no longer going to make iPhones or iPods. Sure they'll come out with some other stuff that will sell, but they'll lose a lot of business just because that's how everyone knows the company.
So short answer: yes and no, the question is stupid.

Agree except last part the question isn't really that stupid.

I don't agree. Ignoring the fact they are not the same thing, A lot of the love Superman and Batman gets is from already being an icon. Sure they are great characters and there are people who love him just for that but many people are drawn to him because he's been injected into the pop culture and people's psyche for longer than many have been alive. Dropping these characters and just implanting some character in their place isn't going to fly. Thats ignoring the fact there have been many similar characters over the years that haven't caught on. They're not interchangeable as we like. Heck if they were I'm convinced DC would have done it long ago. Especially with Superman.
I'm sure they would still exist, but it would cripple them. I'm not insulting DC either, they have plenty of known characters, but there is a reason Batman and Superman are featured in so many monthly books. They are popular characters and they sell books. Marvel can't lose Spider-man and the various Avengers books.
@dernman: i meant icon the superhero.
@dernman: i meant icon the superhero.
I know.
@dernman: oh. ok. my bad.
@thetimestreamer: No prob.
I think they would crash and burn these are the only 2 guys that have helped DC get as far as they have in the buisness. Solely because of these 2 are they able to match Marvel. But if they would get rid of these 2 other characters like Aquaman Green Lantern Flash and Wonder Woman would get a well needed push that they all deserved but that still wouldn`t be enough,
imagine marvel will drop x-men. Yes they would still sell but they wouldn't be gigantic like they are now
If they screw up those two, they are doomed. Green Lantern is already screwed. Who's going to save them? Flash? Wonder Woman? Lol.
Without Batman DC would be hurting, never mind Superman.
It pains me to admit it, but this is correct. Without Batman alone, DC fails.
YES! Dc wuld flop superman and batman are in the top 3 heroes ever created if u lose both then idk what they would do. Good question by the way I mean think abt it no Bats= No bat family as well also NO JOKER
We have plenty of other bat related characters if they dropped these this is my pull list would look like
Worlds finest huntress and power girl
Supergirl
Superboy
Nightwing
Red hood and the outlaws
Teen titans
Batwoman
Batwing
...
...
...
BUT if they dropped every single bat related superman related comic they would DIE HARD
Losing batman and superman is like america losing new york , california, texas , And florida . sure there are alot of other good states but not as good as said states. And im guessing that means the batfamily would be gone to because batman wouldve never been there to create them into who they are so that means no robin , batwing , nightwing , ect.

Defiantly. Maybe we'd finally get a Martian Manhunter title.
They could just barely survive. But only as a comics publisher, no movies or video games.
Kinda what I was thinking.
