Besides the obvious fact that we in real life are on Earth, so it makes sense for us.

In-universe for the comics, is there ever an explanation for why all this bad/major shit goes down on Earth, or relies on Earth heroes?

Because we humans tend to think we're the center of the universe that trickles down to works of fiction like comics.

idk...I mean as far as DC and Marvel goes it seems to be the center and origination of life, breeding ground for metahumans and powerful individuals.

I also dislike that nearly all alien or non-human races look virtually identical to humans.

In such a vast universe, the chances of a completely separate life-form somehow ending up to look exactly like a human is non-existent.

It doesn't make any sense, in comics or regular sci-fi.

Because we're the ones who write the stories, that's the simple answer.

But from a storyteller's perspective, you also have to appreciate how much more accessible you make a looming cosmic story arc by linking it somehow to Earth.

Certainly you can achieve these type of stories without a link to Earth, like in Star Wars, but it does help.

Umm because we live on Earth and the human race naturally makes themselves out to be center of the universe we live in... only makes since writer would write that way.

I don't know, but decades from now aliens will probably start moving to earth and complain that our comics are too "Earth-centric" and then the Aliens will complain that there are too many humans in them and that they need more representation.

In terms of the DCU various explanations have been given.

Earth is the actual center of the universe and not Oa. And the Earthlings are one of the forerunners to become the gods of the upcoming 5th world, after the 4th world dies.

  • The answer is obvious..Its becuase these comics are written by human writer who live on planet Earth and have never been anywhere else...(Its also the same exact reason why most alien characters are humanoids, despite the fact that Aliens most likely wouldn't be)We all have a very Earth centric view of the universe...Sure we may have sent numerous probes to a number of different planets in our solar system over the last 40 years..But that's not exactly the same as living there and experiencing the planets environment for ourselves...Even the Alien planets that they do show in comics are pretty just like the Earth, with some minor differences like tougher or weaker gravity, one constant climate that persist throughout the planet..etc...But besides that their usually the same exact planets as Earth..
  • If comic writers even just took a glance at an actual Astrophysics text book the nature of the cosmos as depicted in comics would become much more interesting and awe inspiring.

Yes. Morrison introduced the 5th world concept in Rock of Ages. While Johns introduced the other in his GL run.

For all intents and purposes the DC Earth is the most important world in its universe.

In DC you have Life Entity sleeping on Earth AND you have Earth as cornerstone of recreated multiverse. In fact it was recreated on Earth. Same story with multiverse recreated on Earth in Marvel now.

Marvel doesn't really have a good explanation for why Earth is the way it is... it just annoys the major galactic empires that it is.

DC has tried with various explanations over the ages. Robinson tried to give one during his JLA run... something about God finding it special or something. Johns made Earth the burial ground of the Life Entity in Blackest Night. The Fourth World has made Earth special due to being the home of Superman who can punch Darkseid in the face.

And ofc Morrison had to sort of top it all off by making Earth the cornerstone to the multivers' structure, if it falls, the multiverse falls and Darkseid gets a chuckle.

In Virtue and Vice, Despero says that many people assume Earth is a big target due to its metahuman population, but he then says it's actually due to Earth's diversity, or something like that.

If that doesn't work for you, then Earth is home to the Anti-Life Equation, hidden in bits and pieces of human minds.

Well, the TOAA and the cosmics are humanoid, so everyone was probably made in their images. Its not a totally random universe.

This bugs me too. I can tolerate the excessive use of the humanoid body shape because there is some credence to the idea that it would be fairly common from an efficiency point of view, but when the aliens are indistinguishable from humans it really frustrates me.

Another thing that tends to bug me is when entire alien species are summed up in one, MAYBE two, cultural groups. Humanity alone has hundreds, if not thousands of different cultures, religions, and languages. But every alien species is mono-cultured. I get that it would take forever to flesh out thousands of different cultures, but one could at least point out that there are other cultures on the planet beyond the one we see.

In any fictional medium humans are always the center piece. I'm sure on other planets in real life the inhabitants think they're the center of their Galaxy

@mysticmedivh: Actually there are quite a lot of villains that don't look like humans but for heroes there are a lot.
