Why doesn't Batman gas his opponents?

throw in some sleepy gas, and it's over. No broken bones.

Eventually they would come back with gas mask and armored clothing so batdarts don't penetrate them. It would be really effective for a while though.

Plot largely. Same reason he just doesn't drop every bad guy he runs into with sonics.

Exactly. There's no reason to fear him if you just fall asleep and wake up in a jail cell the next morning. That, and plot of course.

Also, I think it's his personal way of punishing them. It wasn't cannon, but there was this Batman story I read a while ago where he thought this human trafficking gang beat Catwoman almost to death when she tried to take them on. Batman wanted to bring the gang down, but he also wanted to make them suffer for what they did to Selina.

Why doesn't he fund Arkham?

Becuz he's Batman. He's not there to help people, he's there to punch people because it makes him feel a little better about an event that happened decades ago.

He has funded Arkham, though. It has an insane amount of security measures thanks to Wayne Industries. The only reason the inmates keep escaping is for plot.

That's a fair point. He's purposely crippled dozens of criminals, yet not Joker. He could insure that he'd be eating out of a tube for the rest of his life, but if he did that the writers would be without one of Batman's most iconic villains. Besides, the fact that Joker isn't the least bit physically impaired after how many times Bats has beat the living crap out of him is PIS in and of itself.

He takes them under his wing - bat/robin pun totally intended - because he thinks he can help them. I personally think it's also because he's seen a bit of himself in Grayson, Todd and Damian.

Also gas is not going to work in everybody and you can use mask against it.

Cause it is more fun to beat the sh!t out your opponent. Gassing is just being too nice.

I'd imagine it's because he knows sleeping gas and other such things are still barely understood by doctors today, and doctors can give exact doses, while Batman has to count on the area being correct so A) the gas actually works and B) doesn't give them a fatal overdose.
