@cap10nate: Marvel books are gimmicks. Aside from Hawkeye and Thor, no Marvel book is a must have.
@superguy1591: #hatersgonnahate

Image, Image, and then Image. Image sells great stories. Marvel and DC sell great hype while trying to con you into reading other series.
If you want a wide assortment of quality and diverse book selection, Image hands down dominates everyone else. I don't know that I've picked up an Image book in the last couple years and not found it either good or unique.
If you want a good singular universe, then easily Valiant. The quality of Armor Hunters vs the quality of the recent Marvel and DC events is just laughable. Armor Hunters is well written, all encompassing and well structured. In the 3 months its been going on you NEVER feel like its dragging on.
And finally if you want to read some comics about popular characters you'll see in other medium, then IDW is the answer. Transformers, TMNT, Godzilla, Samurai Jack, Dredd - they have lots of great comics like that.
Anyone who answers Marvel or DC probably has not even picked up a comic not named from those 2. While not everything they put it out is bad (and I pull more books from them than others still because of my love for the characters), the books just do not compare in large. More than half the things they are putting out are all mediocrity (at best).

DOWN WITH INDEPENDENCE! LET RISE POPULARITY! VOTE DC!
Image be putting out crazy good books right now, DC comes right after.

@superguy1591: Uncanny and New Avengers have been great over the past year. As has Fantastic Four. Thor has been very good as you've said but I think Hawkeye tries way to much to be cute and I dropped it because it got annoying. As a whole, I find their books more enjoyable than anyone else. Image and Valiant are close behind for me even though im not in love with Valiant as much as I was the first year.
I only read TMNT from IDW which is great but not good enough to pass the other three for me.
As for DC, i dropped all but 4 titles and get annoyed by the annual hiatus that the stories take in September for their gimmick month. I enjoy the books I pull but don't care about the DC universe at all or the events that go pon like I do in Marvel or Valiant.
@cap10nate: You probably dropped them early in their publications, but the DC books all got really good. I recommend jumping back on after Futures End.
@thecannon: What's your one Image title??
@thecannon: What's your one Image title??
The Walking Dead
Marvel
Yes - this is exactly why you and I are best friends.
- TAS
Yeah man.
Marvel is the best.

I probably gave them around 12-14 issues to entertain me. They were alright, but not nearly as good as the Image and Valiant books I was picking up instead.
I started reading comics with Marvel - and later DC - exclusively, but since I started reading Image comics I've found that they have much more overall quality compared to the Big Two.
@cap10nate: we're 35 issues deep, the books all got better. Especially the Superman books.
@superguy1591: The only book that I have gone back to is Green Arrow after Lemire took over because of how positive the reviews were. If a book doesn't entertain me after spending close to $50 on it, I'm not going to keep throwing money at it. I'll pick some of them up down the road whenever Comixology does a $0.99 sale on them but am already pulling enough books that I thoroughly enjoy to toss more money at a book that didn't interest me to start. I plan on eventually picking up Flash and Wonder Woman from the beginning as I heard good things but that's about it at the moment.
@cap10nate: I'm just curious, but what books were you reading?
DC>Image>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Everything else, though I do love Star Trek Q arch right now and TMNT from IDW. Only thing from Marvel I'm reading now that has my interest honestly is Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 and Death of Wolverine.
I also prefer darker stories which DC and Image both offer better than anyone else at the end of the day.
Right now I feel like DC is doing a great job with their comics...... their live action shows and movies however.... not so much.
It's funny because while I don't like what Marvel is doing in the comics very much right now, I think they are doing a fantastic job in extended media.
@superguy1591: From DC, I am reading Aquaman, Swamp Thing, Batman, and Green Arrow (might drop now that Lemire is gone)
Image -> Lazarus, Fade Out, Velvet, Invincible, Zero
Valiant -> X-O Manowar, Armor Hunters, Bloodshot, Harbinger: Omega, Rai, Eternal Warrior (whenever that picks back up)
Marvel -> Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, Avengers World, Secret Avengers (might drop as I don't like Kot's humor in it), Invaders, Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Punisher, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Winter Soldier (starting next month), GOTG (only last issue and next two for Richard Rider)
Marvel based 95% on my incredible enjoyment of where Fialkov is taking the Ultimate Marvel universe. Also, finally starting to warm up to Ultimate Spider-Man, mostly because of the return of Norman Osborn.
I'm going with DC. The new 52 disappointed a lot of fans but too me it was a double edged sword. Forever Evil was tooooooo DAMN good that was the best latest event.
