Yes... Everyone is different. Especially if one makes the conscious effort to lose their accent.

If she's actively trying to fit in she would, and that does fit with her character arc so I'm sure that is the line they would use as an in universe explanation, but it's probably really just that people thought it sounded cheesy/dumb in AoU.
