What comic stories do you know of where people either seem to absolutely love it or absolutely hate it? (like a 50-50 split)
What comic stories have the biggest split among fans?
@fil123: It seems pretty polarizing here.
@saint_wildcard: Yep, Snyder knows how to write divisive stories. =D
The Killing Joke(?)
I thought everybody loved that one.

I've seen literally no one that actively hates it. Do you have links to where you saw some of these comments? Was it on here?
I would not say it's even remotely split enough to be on here.
but more and more female readers are trashing it for what happens to Barbara in it. Claiming the book is sexist And Hateful Towards Women Which Is Bullshit.
It's 1 woman.
And Bad shit happens to good people of any gender.

Ah ok. Hadn't seen any of those myself.
There's a large number of people (on this site in particular) who absolutely loathe it for whatever reason.
People who hate Snyder's Batman run have had good reasons for it.

Complaining about fridging female characters isn't really bs and the writer of the comic regrets writing it.

That's feminist talk, son.

Your point being? Are you going to mention SJW next?

I was kidding.
I don't think it's a sexist thing when a woman (particularly a love interest) dies, I think it's lazy writing. They want something shocking to happen without actually shaking things up, so they just kill an 'important', yet replaceable character.
It's less rampant misogyny and more rampant laziness.

True but it's unintentional sexism in media - most main characters are male and heterosexual making their partners women who get the short end of the stick. There are less dead/wronged boyfriends than girlfriends.

Alex Dewitt just stopped existing. Barbara Gordon became Oracle. There's a difference.

Not by Alan Moore. There were no plans for Barbara Gordon after The Killing Joke and the Oracle character got made because Kim Yale had a problem with the character's treatment and story.

Well duh! Killing Joke was originally an OGN, completely separate from main continuity. It's a random one-shot that wasn't even part of any of the other bat titles at the time. He didn't know what he had done to the character would even be honored, let alone that it would shape that character's future for decades.
It's not fridging.

I wouldn't really call that sexist. I mean, they don't die because they're women, they die because they mean something to the main character. When it's someone like Midnighter and Apollo, the same thing happens (one of them is 'wronged' so the other gets revenge).

Funny how you cared when you asked why some people hate the Killing Joke.
Just because it's an one-shot and he thought it was out of continuity doesn't prevent it from being fridging. The female character gets shoot and sexually humiliated in the expense of male characters (Batman and Gordon) and the story doesn't focus at all how Barbara herself felt about it.

If it fits the narrative and bolsters the overall quality of a story, then I don't have any problems with it. It only ends up being a controversial issue when it happens to established female characters. He didn't think that particular story beat would be taken anywhere, so I don't think it's something to get worked up about. Well, let me rephrase, I think the fact that it did get carried over to main continuity is something to get worked up about, but that shouldn't affect people's views or opinions on The Killing Joke itself.

I'm going to need someone to explain this meme to me.
The Killing Joke(?)
To be fair, the feminists who diss the book aren't even comic fans.
One More Day alienated as many Spider-Man fans as it attracted new readers. In DC, I suspect The New 52 has similarly created a paradigm shift that not everyone is on board with. Outside the Big 2, I don't know that it cost titles readers, but certainly when the Wildstorm peeps jumped ship from Image to DC, some stories had to end or change direction abruptly. When Miracle Man got rapey, a lot of readers probably threw their hands up. That's why Marvel polybags it now.
@knightsofdarkness2: aren't even comic fans.
Sure.

I am a feminist and also a comic fan and I had problems with the way Barbara was treated in the book.
@aros001: I love that guys art.
@awesomestprime: Oh my waffles, those are amazing.
