@minigunman123: try to mimic spending it on something else while spending it on comics - but it has to be something they'll believe an dif possible fakeable (don say you spend it on chocolate and then you dont get fat at all)

Yeah, you should explain to your parents that comic books are technically a chapter to a book. Your parents sound like close-minded people. I feel sorry for you, and good luck getting more comics!

@minigunman123: it's all good dude. I'm telling you it will work. Trust me, when your parents think you cut yourself and sniff oxycontin, drinking and having sex doesn't even seem bad. Reading comics makes you look like an angel. And buying a journal is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying an ipad.

Alright, I'll give this a shot.

I'll be honest with everyone here. After this bullcrap at home I had a huge post detailing crap from my life, and was thinking of running away to live elsewhere. But the support on here, even though I haven't even spoken about much of my life to warrant the support; it's astounding! This community will always have a place somewhere special in my heart :)

Also, no, I'm not going to do the stupid thing and run away. A great friend of mine pointed out it would be bad, a little stupid, and selfish, not to mention dangerous. No need for us to go down that road again >.>

just smuggle them, pay with cash and nobody will know

Buy a bag of pot, every time she sees comics after that she'll just be happy you're not spending the money on drugs.

I brought some comics home while visiting my mom. She asked me what I paid for them, and I said "three bucks a pop." She replied, "well that's an inexpensive little vice you got there." I guess I'm lucky.

What I'm saying is, if she thinks you spend too much on comics, buy less of them. I take advantage of my local library quite often, btw.

Get them from the library.

Sure, you'll have to read collections instead of monthlies, which means you'll be a bit behind.  And sure they won't have everything you want.  But it could at least save you a fair amount of money and show your mom that you're being money conscious.

@minigunman123: You are smart. Im sure you can find a way to smuggle it into your house. just be smart about it. you don't have to buy a crap load at once. memorize the weekly schedule and buy one or two of them with out your parents knowing. Ive done that on several occassion with my comics to my parents now that im on my own now I can buy comics when I want. but since I work in a comic store i don't really have to buy unless i really want too as i can read any of them anytime i want.... YAY!

I'm the parent of a 16 year old girl as well as a huge comic book fan. I would love it if she spent the money I give her on comic books instead of the junk she buys. Her interests revolve primarily around her boyfriend, her friends, and girly trinkets on pinterest. There are so many negative things you could be doing with the money they give you. Nearly any book outside of pornorgraphy is better than no book at all and comics and graphic novels are legitimate literature. In college I had at least three courses that included graphic novels in the curriculum, one if which was a creative writing course that spent more than a month on Maus: A survivors tale. As a parent the best advice I can give you is go to the library and check out a few high concept graphic novels like Maus (Pulitzer prize winner), Asterios Polyp, or maybe even Ghost World or Persepolis and show them comics can be highly intellectual and mentally gratifying. If your parents aren't the type to respond to reason and rationality I might advise waiting the year and a half until your 18 and buy all the comics you want. You can easily fill your time reading great non-comic book literature that have comic book subtext until then. Anything by Neil Gaiman is good, Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, or books written about the comic book industry like Stan Lee's The origins of Marvel Comics or Tales to Astonish: Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and the American Comic Book Revolution and Stan Lee and the Rise and Fall of the American Comic Book are all great ways to spend time until your freshman year in college. Good luck.
