So my dad just told me that buying comic books are a waste of money. I don't agree. Anybody else have a problem similar to this? How do you deal with it?
My dad says comic books are a waste of money.
Its actually a pretty common problem that's existed since comics first became a thing. The reason all those Golden Age comics are so valuable is that parents would toss them out with the garbage or donate them to paper drives for the war effort. And that was back when they cost a nickle I imagine now that they can run you 3 to 4 bucks an issue its probably any even bigger problem now.
^^ Agree
Back in the day (I'm a 90s kid) where they used to cost about $1.50 to $1.99 which was no biggie so it's understandable why your pops would say "It's a waste of money" since their prices sky rocketed. But then again novels run about 5.99 to 14.99 and if your dads says"That's a good investment" then I find that ironic.

You know what else is a waste of money? Buying music, movies or any kind of food that is more than your basic dietary needs. But hey it's the things we enjoy that make our life worth living.

You're right and he's wrong. Ignore his comment.

I've never had that problem. It's a valid hobby and reading cultivates the mind. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong period

If someone ever told me this kind of crap. I'd just ignore them, it's not worth my time to waste on debating this.
Unless you're spending your dad's money on it, he doesn't really have a say in what's a waste of money. If it's coming out of your pocket...it's up to you, what you want to do.
In terms of sheer money per minute they are probably the most expensive form of entertainment. 3-4 dollars for something that takes 15 minutes to read at most? Movie theater is 10 dollars for 2 hours, paperback books are like 8 bucks for like 10 hours, games vary wildly, but an RPG is usually at least 30 hours for 60 bucks. Not to mention you still have to put up with ads, in a manner that's generally much more intrusive than the three entertainment mediums I just listed (if they have them at all). I wouldn't call them a waste of money, but I would definitely have a lot more to do with my check if I didn't read comics. And honestly I think that the cost of comics is really one of the reasons that the industry isn't as big as it could be, and mostly relies on support from existing readers. I don't know anything about the cost of printing, but if publishers could get their books out for cheaper, then I think they would be doing themselves a disservice not to.
Anything that is seen as a simple hobby is seen as a waste of money. Hell I'm grown and the 'rents still chide me for spending $$$ on comics.
he's pretty much right but if you enjoy reading them then keep doing it...just don't expect any of the current day comics to ever be worth anything comparable to the Golden Age stuff...heck don't expect them to be comparable to some Silver age stuff

Who gives a fuck if its your money spend it your way. Unless your addicted to comics, and pay 100,000 dollars a month on it.
You might want to censor that.

If it's your money, then it doesn't really matter. If he's giving you money to spend as you please, then it still doesn't really matter.

That's the million dollar question.

@nerdork: What about 'adult' magazines? Would they be seen as a waste of money? I mean they do contain writing but people are otherwise distracted if you catch my drift? ;)
Thats funny, I wondered how long it would take for someone to respond to my post with this. 5 minutes. lol
IMO, if he/she is reading the articles and not just going through the act of self-gratification...then no, its not a waste.
I used to have the same thing with my parents, I just told them that I enjoy them so I'm happy to "waste" my money on them. They eventually stopped going on at me about it.
They are a waste of money but so is smoking and drinking and there is less enjoyment in smoking at least so do wha you want

Lol quoteception
I did not listen to my dad when he was alive since there were lots of other people who were smarter than my dad. Just get advice from other people and avoid becoming a clone of dad.
@McLovin123: Yes I had this problem about 25 years ago when my father threw away thousands of pounds worth of comics!
