Legendary Comics released Axiom today, a 144 page book featuring artwork from Ed Benes and colorist Dinei Ribeiro. This is the publisher's first superhero comic, written by Mark Waid.

No Caption Provided

Axiom and Thena, aliens from another world, arrive on earth and exhibit extraordinary powers. Benevolent and godlike, they cure humanity's ills and usher in an era of peace, prosperity and complacency.

A series of tragic events reveals another side of Axiom: humanity's savior becomes its worst nightmare. A Defense Department analyst, armed with only scientific knowledge and courageous spirit takes on the turned hero in a fight for mankind's survival!

Aside from this being Legendary's first book featuring a superhero, it's an original piece, not based on another property, which is primarily what Legendary has been doing with their comics the past couple of years. The new book is available for $19.99 through your local comic retailer or through Amazon.

Too similar to "Irredeemable".

I don't know if I will pick it up. If its great, maybe then, but all in all, I am not interested in the concept.

@squalleon:

Funny. I was just thinking the same thing. We'll see, Superman is one of those characters you can reinvent 50 times over.

I agree. But still this is the same concept (down to the opposition being super-smart guys) by the same writer!

Isn't most of Mark Waid's independent superhero books mostly based on a character with a superman power set ?

Me too. I'd like to see something different for once. Maybe something like Superman Red Son in the sense is ship shows up later but instead misses Earth completely, flies into the sun and the world has to go on without Superman ever showing up :P It'd be interesting to me.

The whole "superman" or "Superman analog" is secretly evil has been done to death; Superman Red Son, The Boys, etc. etc.

Yep, for $20 and basically a one shot it's a hard sell for me. While the interior art is beautiful I just can't see me forking the cash over. I agree to much bad Supermen these days maybe should have had Thena go to the dark side or something else.

I like Ed Benes but I also like Andrew Jack$on. It will have to look really good for me to choose the book over the bucks.

Essentially. Kind of how Flashpoint was all about the world without Flash :P

Will reserve judgment until I've given the first issue a read.

Let's hope the storyline doesn't revolve around the world being destroyed again, and this guy having to be put down. (Basically the anti-superman archetype of Irredeemable, Injustice Superman, Sentry, etc...)

Or a Superman that lands on a completely different world? Why's it gotta be Earth all the time?

It's been a long time since I have been at least slightly enthusiastic about a Mark Waid book and this ain't the one either. He has been such a lackluster writer for the last couple of years.

I liked the animated movie DC Gods and Monsters, entirely new take on Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman. I won't give too much away if you haven't seen it but Bruce Timm returned to animation (that is the man who gave us Harley Quinn and the Batman animated series) to make it. It's worth checking out.

I do think Superman of another world would be kind of cool. Maybe a world with two suns, one young, one old; one with yellow energy and one with red energy so he gets some of his powers like super strength but no invulnerability.

I loved Waid's run on the Flash, his Superman stuff with Ross, and Irredeemable. I'm treating myself to a graphic novel in the next few days and I wonder if this is the one I should go for. Has anyone read it? Is it any good or is it just a retread of concepts explored by Waid himself or other writers before?

Which was his one trick? Given his run on Daredevil got really bad reviews, but he's had a pretty successful career I'd say.

I like Irredeemable. I think I will read this one.

I just hope it's not TOO similar story of Irredeemable.
