So, today I watched The Dark Knight again. I'm sure allot of users on this site will agree with me when I say Heath Ledger's performance was fantastic. That got me to thinking: If the next Batman franchise where to have the Joker, is there anyone that could match Mr. Ledger's showing?

I'm interested to see who you'd pick as the next actor for Batman's greatest foe.

There's no point in matching it, it was simply Ledger's iteration of the character. Which is as different from Jack Nicholson in the role as Cesar Romero (from the 60's Batman show) ! The same can be said of all the Batman portrayals. After the first movies with Michael Keaton would the rest of the actors who played Batman try to act like him, no, it's a non -issue! The thing about actors is, well they act, they take roles and put their spin on characters along with what's expected. So I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there is no standard for portraying the Joker. Also how many Catwomen have there been in the past? None of them were the same and all were unique. Eartha Kitt's verbal portrayal was the best ever and can never be duplicated, that's just the way it is!

I definitely see your point.

Is there anyone you would be interested in seeing there take on the Joker?

@wolverine08: Man, that was one of the best scenes in that movie. Is there another actor you'd like to see as the Joker?

Probably not but Heath Ledger's/Nolan's Joker is rather influential through both the comics and movies. And he's still remembered a lot more especially because of MCU villains apart Loki which are trying to resonated him. Even Michael Shannon's Zod had a bit of Joker in him!

I couldn't read the rest of this post at this point, simply because I was imagining and elderly golfer running around yelling "why so serious?" (I realise the spelling is different for him too, but this typo made me lol).

Well I already think it has been matched in a somewhat different take many years earlier by Jack Nicolson. That's actually my favorite iteration of the character. Chillingly hilarious.

@battle_forum_junkie:

I think Tom Hiddlestone could be a great Joker.

hhmmm... not sure about that. I mean he's a good actor, I just don't see it personally. But maybe I'm just being closed minded.

I actually didnt like Heath's Joker. So I am sure atleast in my opinion there's plenty who could match him easily.

Not sure who it should be, but I wasn't a fan of Heath Ledgers version, so I imagine someone else could do it in a way that I would like.

People thought nobody would be able to outdo Jack Nicholson, and look what happened. I loved Ledger as Joker but I think it would be kind of disrespectful to believe that nothing will ever be comparable or able to surpass it.

@uncanny_doom: Except that Ledger didn't "outdo" Nicholson. It was a different type of performance. I personally enjoyed Nicholson's interpretation more.

Its not so much is there an actor its what path that actor takes. Heath went for a calmer more serious Joker compared to Jack's it was refreshing and something different I think the next person to play the Joker will not try to be like Heath's version in the least and it will work out fine.

Gary Busey...

:D

Kidding, of course. I would love to see a lesser-known actor take on the role if the character is used again, but since the new series will focus on an older Batman, I don't know too many routes they could take. I thought Sean Rogerson could be interesting in the role, especially after his character's descent into madness during Grave Encounters, but would definitely be an adversary to a younger Batman.

Nope. He was The Joker. How could anyone beat The Joker at playing The Joker?

(Seriously, though, there's probably a handful of actors that could beat him, but he set a really high bar)

Ledger's Joker was great in nearly every way and he had plenty of creative freedom to make the character his own. Whoever plays Joker next needs that same luxury.
