I'm thinking of trying the new 52's JLD series. Though, I've got two questions. Is the JLD series good so far and is it easily accessible to newbies? (As in, am I going to be questioning the characters, their backstory, etc?)

I started with Lemire onwards (#9) and was okay. It's a good jumping-on point as there was a new team lineup for it.

It can kinda get crossover happy though, adding guest characters from other titles that isn't really essential to the story.

Milligan's opening stint was great and Lemire's run was really good. I haven't been reading DeMatteis' run, though, since I don't care about Blight.

@exphio: I don't know of it's quality, but the other users seem to be ignoring your question about accessibility to newbies. Be forewarned that it's in the middle of an 18 part, multi-title crossover called Forever Evil: Blight. So, I'd wait until that's over with before jumping on.

Its decent. Its not great or amazing but if you like the characters or the genre I would say its worth your money.

I think it's fairly new-reader friendly. Peter Milligans' run was great, Jeff Lemires' was good, Ray Fawkes' was kind of average, and currently J.M. DeMatteis' run with Blight is as good, or perhaps better than Jeff Lemires'. Blight is a big crossover with Constantine, Pandora and Phantom Stranger, whose issues by J.M. DeMatteis and Ray Fawkes have been generally pretty good. It's nearly finished though, so here's a reading order in case you decide to catch up:

  1. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #24
  2. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #25
  3. TRINITY OF SIN: THE PHANTOM STRANGER #14
  4. CONSTANTINE #9
  5. TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #6
  6. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #26
  7. TRINITY OF SIN: THE PHANTOM STRANGER #15
  8. CONSTANTINE #10
  9. TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #7
  10. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #27
  11. TRINITY OF SIN: THE PHANTOM STRANGER #16
  12. CONSTANTINE #11
  13. TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #8
  14. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #28
  15. TRINITY OF SIN: THE PHANTOM STRANGER #17
  16. CONSTANTINE #12
  17. TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #9
  18. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #29

It may also be helpful to read Trinity War before Blight.

A new story arc starts in #30 with J.M. DeMatteis staying on as writer, so the tone and quality should be similar to blight. Unfortunately, Mikel Janin, who's been the artist since the start, apart from a few fill-in issues, has recently left, and the new arc will be handled by Andres Guinaldo, who I've seen some decent work by.

Overall it's been pretty good, with high and low points as I mentioned. I'm hoping for good things from the next arc.

The first arc (issue #1-#6) is quite confusing in my opinion and you will only fully understand the second arc, Rise of the Vampires, if you pick up the I, Vampire issues that correspond with it (it's a crossover). I would start when Jeff Lemire takes over, at issue #9. It's understandable and a pretty good read. I don't have any of the newer issues because I buy trade paperbacks, but I've heard the series isn't bad until the Forever Evil bit.

Good team comic especially now with the addition of Nightmare Nurse. I think that Phantom Stranger is the better of the Dark titles, but I've been happy with JLD.

Pretty much the same for me. As far as it being accessible to newbies, it would be, if not for the carousel of obscure characters that are always popping in and out.

I disagree. Constantine like any other character that's been written about so much has been written in many different ways over the years. While the New 52 Constantine isn't exactly like the Constantine many people may picture in their mind I wouldn't say he's really that different. The biggest difference imo is his expanded history with Zatanna and the fact that they seem to have condensed a lot of his backstory. Aside from that, they can't do stories as edgy as the old Vertigo books could but that's to be expected and I think the tone of Constantine's character and stories has largely stayed the same, even if it's not quite as edgy any more.

Not really. Its kind of bland or sub-par. Mediocre maybe.
