I really love Mask of the Phantasm, but I just can't vote for it when there's an animated film with Jason in it.

im THIS'ing this so HARD right now. I remember going to the movies on Christmas day to see that movie. One of the best movie going experiences i ever had.

Mask of the Phantasm, without a doubt. I think it's the pinnacle of the animated Batman features. Just so good.

RED HOOD..crowbar scene for both Joker and Jason. Joker being gun-ho to die and the way he signed up with Black mask. Dick and Bruce team up. Jason moves were amazing. Bruce owning him in the apartment but apart of Jason's plan.

very similar movies about revenge but Red Hood did it better. TAS was the best cartoon ever but the movie was just a longer episode.

What is this? PHANTASM is the obvious choice. The best character who's never made it into the main DC universe. What a shame that is.

Mask of The Phantasm. Under The Red Hood is certainly one of the best animated film out of the new original DC Animated movies. But Mask of The Phantasm is probably the best DC film of all time. The compelling mystery, the spot on character writing, the interesting backstory for before Bruce Wayne became Batman, the Joker's awesome role, there's so much to be said on the quality of this film. It simply has no equal in terms of DC animated films and Marvel animated comic book films too. It's just that good and too enjoyable to watch, even decades after its original release.

UtRH, I think I seen part of MotP I didn't think much of it, I need to watch it again.

Mask of the Phantasm, no-brainer. That movie just felt so epic, and full. Under the Red Hood was too small scale, and I am not a Neil Patrick Harris fan, especially for Nightwing.

Under the Red Hood gets my vote.

i, for one, can't stand mark of the phantasm. uninteresting, the animation didn't age well at all, it looks goofy. people complained when they changed the art style in batman tas to the justice league version, but that style made it ageless. it will still look good 20 years from now. anyhow, under the red hood is perfection. no flaws. superb voice acting (did NOT miss kevin conroy and supernatural guy was amazing, the feels in his voice), great action (really showing skills), story is great.

I personally believe that MOTP is, in the end, a slightly better movie. First of all, the voice acting was superb. After all, who can beat Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill? Unfortunately, Greenwood and Dimaggio could not. Also, while Under the Red Hood had good, strong moments (such as the last scene) I believe that there are better ones in MOTP. For example, when Bruce first dons the batman costume, the music perfectly fits in and Alfred's expression... The plots, for me, were about the same quality. The only thing Under the Red Hood has on MOTP is action. Still, MOTP for the win.

Tough call, touch call. Both are so very good. It has been many years since I watched Mask of the Phantasm, so I meet need to have a mini Batfilm marathon and watch both again back-to-back before casting my vote. :)

Mask of Phantasm, even though Jason Todd is my bat family favorite, Phantasm was just way to iconic.

Under the Red Hood is he best depiction of Batman and the Joker I have ever seen. Not to mention one of the greatest films, animated or otherwise, I've ever had the pleasure of watching. So definitely UtRH, for me. Though Mask of the Phantasm was also an amazing film.

MotP. Under the Red Hood was an ok adaptation of a pre-existing arch. Mask of the Phantasm is an excellent, original story (and Red Hood can't beat Conroy and Hamill in their respective roles).

Under the Red Hood is a great film, but Mask of the Phantasm is a pretty solid contender for one of the best Batman stories ever told in any medium.

I voted for Under the Red Hood. It's just a fascinating, well written animated movie. Which doesn't act just as a character study of Batman, but of crime itself. It's really cool that all corners of crime are covered in the film and given time to shine.

To paraphrase Captain Logan from Geekvolution.....

On one end, we have Complete Chaos shown by the Joker. A man who just wants everything to be random, and disorganized.... Than we have Controlled Chaos, shown by Black Mask. Who wants everything to be chaotic and crime ridden, but only if he agrees to it.....Finally we have Controlled Crime, shown by Red Hood. Who wants to control crime, but refuses to take part in the more chaotic parts like selling drugs to children because he has standards....After Jason, we have Chaotic Vigilantism, shown by Ra's Al Ghul. A man who topples governments and would gladly resort to killing but only for the greater good....Beside Chaotic Vigilantism, is just Dark Vigilantism shown in the film by Batman. A man who fights crime, doesn't resort to killing, but does resort to darker scare tactics like torture to get what he wants. Than on the farthest from Complete Chaos, we have Nightwing with just plain old Vigilantism. He does the same things Batman does, but is a lot more upbeat and happy go lucky about it. Batman would resort to tactics, I doubt Nightwing would ever bother thinking of.

Batman Under the Red Hood, has a great cast by the way. I know I'm probably going to get a huge amount of slack for this. But I like Bruce Greenwood as Batman more than Kevin Conroy. Bruce has this drill sergeant/Solid Snake way of speaking that is just awesome. It's perfect for Batman. Conroy has been the main voice for Batman for years, but after years of nothing but him. I want to see other actors be given the chance. Jensen Ackles is perfect as Red Hood. For a guy with zero voice acting experience, he did a phenomenal job. Especially in that explosive finale which has more tension and emotion than most live action movies. While John Dimaggio is no Mark Hamill, he certainly does give a good performance as The Joker, and Wade Williams is hilarious as Black Mask.

Mask of the Phantasm was great, but Under the Red Hood just feels a lot more complex and emotional. Mask of the Phantasm has it's emotional moments, but Under the Red Hood is nothing BUT emotional moments. Even the action scenes are emotional. From the fight against the The Fearsome Hand of Four, which feels like a "good old days" fight that turns sour. To that final fight, which is just epic and feels like a son beating up his old man.

I gotta give it to Under The Red Hood. It just feels a lot more complex, emotional, and better written. Mask of the Phantasm still has the emotion and the writing is still really good. But it doesn't feel as complex and that finale in Under The Red Hood is just too good.

God, I was just a kid when I saw "Mask of the Phantasm". But the soundtrack was so 'effin amazing I'm voting for it.

Mask of the Phantasm buy a mile. As a part of its time still tells a better more complete story and what one would likely consider a "Batman" story in 76 minutes than any of his live action 90s counter parts. Also cheap plug I wrote a pair of things on Mask of the Phantasm my BatmanBatmanBatman piece and a lil something for its 20th anniversary.

Under the Red Hood comes togeter nicely in the end and has some nice action but in totality dosen't match the thematic depth and craftsmanship in Phantasm. Also cheap plug here's my BatmanBatmanBatmanUnder the Red Hood piece.

Curious was this set in advance? Given that today is 6/23 the release of Batman(1989) an interesting question would've been Batman(1989) and Batman Returns the pair of odd ball Burton films.

Under the Red Hood was nothing that hadn't been shown in the comics before, whereas was a standalone project. That stuff was Blockbuster material.

Mask of the Phantasm is what Batman should be in any medium. Though I also love Under the Red Hood.

Both of these are fantastic but it has to be Mask of the Phantasm for me. It is so great and captures such a big part of my childhood.

Plain and simple the best DC film of all time, animated or live action, is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It is the only DC animated feature to be released in theaters, it features career best voice acting from Mark Hammil, Kevin Conroy, and the rest of the Batman series cast, THE MOST EXCELLENT SOUNDTRACK BATMAN HAS EVER HAD, and is one of the single most well written animated films I have ever seen. The mystery is well and truly interesting, the stakes high, and the whole film has a pervasive darkness to it that makes it feel like Batman meets Freddy Kreuger. The scene with Buzz Bronski in the graveyard is one of the most memorable things I have ever scene in an all ages film and surprises me to this day how dark it is, ultimately proving that just because something is dark and violent that it does not corrupt children and a little horror is more than accepted but welcomed in films for all ages. The flashbacks were a tad confusing when I was younger but were still entertaining and the film has some really great lines. The animation is not only top notch but timeless, unlike the anime inspired Red Hood film, and while not as complex as Red Hood I welcome its simplicity. It is a self contained story that required no knowledge of anything but who Batman is. Red Hood throws in Amazo and a barely cameo of Nightwing and all kinds of stuff. Overly complicated but it does work. Nostalgia may be one of the forces driving my opinion but to me Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is unbeatable. Batman: Under the Red Hood, your angel of death awaits......

Really hard decision! I had to go with Both! I love Red Hood more, but Mask of the Phantasm holds a special place in my heart for doing such a great job of telling a story, introducing new characters, AND it's classic Batman: The Animated Series. That Noir look to the show never gets old, and Mark hamil really got to play it up. AND it was released in theatres. But I REALLY love Under the Red Hood. It was a great story, love the source material, Nightwing gets to shine in his actual comic uniform, AND is voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, I loved John DiMaggio's take on the Joker, and his scenes are just fantastic. PLUS GREAT ACTION and a great story!! So yeah I'm torn. I really think Mask of Phantasm was a better film, but I really do like them equally for different reasons. This is why I don't have a favorite movie.

I love them both but I voted for Under the Red Hood. They are two of my favorite movies of all time, not just animated movies. In my opinion Under the Red Hood is a little more awesome than Mask of the Phantasm.

Love both but MotP had a much better story to it and better voice acting and score to it.

I'm sorry, but anyone voting for Under the Red Hood has clearly never seen Mask of the Phantasm. It's not just my favorite animated comic movie, it might be my favorite comic movie period (up there w/ The Dark Knight and The Avengers). Its story is deep, edgy (especially compared to Batman: TAS tv show), the voice acting is ridiculously good / spot on, the action is amazing, the score alone is practically tear-inducing, etc. I love Under the Red Hood, but seriously if you haven't seen MotP you need to LIKE NOW. It is astoundingly good.

Yeah, Mask of the Phantasm is probably the best Batman movie period, if you don't count The LEGO Movie. Under the Red Hood is very good, but Mask of the Phantasm is transcendent. There's a reason it's the only animated Batman movie that was released theatrically, again, if you don't count The LEGO Movie.

I never really got the appeal of MotP. It's as good as TAS, but not better.

Under the Red Hood is my favorite Batman film so far released. To me, it is the only one that gets the characters correct. I don't mind and often enjoy seeing different adaptations, but they have to keep the core of the characters correct. This is what every single live action film has failed to so so far with Batman.

The animated movies excel at this (well not recently), and Under the Red Hood is the best of all. It shows Batman as a master detective, master martial artist and compassionate and complex human being. It's the closest movie bringing my comics to life. I love the mystery of who the Red Hood is, despite already knowing the answer this didn't take away from the film. It is interesting to watch Batman's suspicions grow. There is a lot of emotion in the animation and voice acting.

Despite it not being Conroy, I have zero complaints with Greenwood taking over the role. He does a most excellent job in my opinion, projecting a gravitas that Conroy lacked. Not that Conroy isn't capable but I think they played the characters differently, and I think the performance in UtRH suited a more adult, emotional story.

I loved the way Nightwing and the Joker were handled. Some people thought the Joker had an odd accent, but I didn't notice this. Not American, so maybe didn't pick up on the accent. Red Hood himself was an excellent character. I've always liked Jenson Ackles on Supernatural and wished he had managed to break out of a CW show. He gets a chance to shine here, and I think he does a stellar job. At the start he is cocky and in control, and as the film progresses he becomes less stable, increasingly letingt his hurt show through his voice until the climax.

The climax is excellent. It's a very intense emotional standoff that shows the core of both of these characters. The entire movie builds to this standoff and it doesn't disappoint. Some people may think that Batgod made an appearance, but to me...it was just Batman. He acted exactly how he should, and saved the day as you would expect, using a combination of intellect and physical capabilities. Not to mention you can see just how well batman trained Red Hood when the apartment was part of his plan...

It's also nice to see Black Mask be a main supporting character as he generally doesn't get the same love as Batman's other rouges, and a nice surprise visit from Ra's, that actually pushes the story along.

If there is one bad point, it is the fight with Amazo at the beginner is unnecessary and I would have preferred to see some interactions with the JL, or even Batman just taking down some thugs in the shadows.

This is the only Batman film I am happy to rewatch. I long for the day when a live action adaptation is anywhere neat this level of accuracy in it's character portrayals.
