I noticed in a lot of threads that involve Dr Manhattan they always sat he wins. I don't get why though. They pit him against characters with MANY years of feats against a guy with a small handful of feats. They also say that he wins because he is described to have immense power but that is just speculated power where there are characters who have PROVEN their power. Overall I feel Dr Manhattan is over rated on the vine. I mean people think he can beat Silver Surfer. I mean I don't understand how a guy who just blows up a few thugs is considered all powerful. Someone even said he beats Pre Retcon Beyonder.

Do you think he's over rated.

State any opinion.

NOTE: I'm not clear on his seeing the future ability. Can someone describe that.

IMO he can beat anyone who has no reality or matter manipulating powers (i.e. Captain America, Hawkeye, Beast Boy) other than that it's debatable, and assuming he can't beat them there's no way they can hurt him really. I wouldnt say he's overrated much, but overused

@PurpleCandy:

Any telepath can beat him, because there's no evidence that he's immune to telepathy - there's more evidence to suggest he would be vulnerable (the man has a brain).

you remind me to put him on the worst teammate list. remeber even though he has the power he known inefficient for it during missions. a smooth talker can easily manipulate him since he does not have much motivation.

I don't think even a telepath would work. He sees all of time simultaneously, so he'd see your telepath coming years off and make their brain explode or something. He's definitely an absurdly overpowered character, but that's sort of the point of him.

He perceives time completely different than we do. He has too much power of time, and it made gave him a different point of view because of this.

I honestly don't get the hate for him.

@Yung ANcient One: He's overused. They put him against people like Galactus, Silver Surfer, Pre Retcon Beyonder, Pre Retcon Molecule Man, Spectre, Classic Dr Strange and Fate, etc. If he wasn't over used then I wouldn't dislike him as much.

@RoyHarperBLOW: It kind of makes sense to me for people wanting or feeling like it's okay to do that. He can teleport anywhere, and the way he talks in the movie...

"I don't believe there is a God, and if there is... I am nothing like him"

"If only you could perceive time; like I do."

"You're about to convince me to save Earth... we already had this conversation."

plus speculations like

"You could've turned the Glass into water or something, but you didn't"

I honestly think he could be DC's Molecule man, but maybe he isn't I don't know

@RoyHarperBLOW: Years of feats don't make a guy beat someone stronger..Take hulk, for example. It doesn't matter how angry he gets. He is not punching something intangiable! Hits feats don't mean anything, because they are mostly strength related.. but I agree that he is a bit overused.

Although I agree that Dr. Manhattan is overrated, most the battle threads (on this site) that I've seen involving him, people seem to understand that. For example, I think it's just a small (but vocal) group of Dr. Manhattan fanboys that think he can beat Silver Surfer.

I think there's basically 2 problems with him, both of which are really more problems with Watchmen itself.

1) Manhattan comes from a universe in which he is pretty much the only character above street-level, and therefore his accomplishments seem more impressive in comparison.

and

2) I've actually met a lot of people that scoff at me for reading comics, but claim to love Watchmen. Basically people who think comics are for kids, but went ahead and read Watchmen because Time Magazine listed it as one of the "100 greatest novels of the 20th centuries." As a result a lot of his fans have literally no knowledge of comics outside of Watchmen.

the logic behind the Watchmen story is different from the logic of main stream comics. It doesn't really matter how many feats prove that Dr Manhattan is an extremely powerful character: we are being told that he is almost god-like and that on its own represents a problem that humanity can not handle, especially since there are no other super powered beings in the Watchmen universe. It is far better to read the original comic than to watch the movie or read a review, you need to get immersed in their universe to fully understand what he represents.

He's one of those "do anything" characters that pulls new abilities out of his @$$ at random. YAWN. In the context of Watchmen, him being some kind of commentary on that type of character, I guess it works. Manhattan does not work as a character who is supposed to get out and brawl with others. Only the most powerful cosmic entities even have a prayer. Even then, what does the fight look like? Whoever can get the drop on the other just snaps his fingers and wipes the other out of existence. Boring.

He's not overrated, some people just need to understand that in modern times, comics are sometimes meant to be kept to their own universe and it's not always about everyone fighting everyone else. Dr. Manhattan was created for a specific universe and that's where his story works and it all makes sense, there are other characters like this that get pulled into battle threads a lot. Personally, I don't see why it matters who's more powerful, I would think the battles forum would be about creating scenarios where a fight would take place (basically like fan-fic but focusing on fights).

This was true at the time. However, newer comics appear to be justifying the hype.

Yup. There's nothing but loose implications and ambiguous notes that allude to the idea that he's behind Rebirth, but I've yet to see any reason to believe it.

Not anymore since he is barely featured in any battles. But back in 2009-2010, when the movie had just come out?. Hells to the yes.

@charan_: To be fair, this thread was made years before rebirth, where the good doctor's best offensive feat was disintegrating a tank. Yet people would think he was limitless and unbeatable.

When Watchmen came out people thought he could beat Silver Surfer for some reason so yes he was overrated back then but probably not now since Rebirth

Technically, it's not canon that Dr. Manhattan is behind Rebirth so if this based off of the watchmen comic feats then he is overrated.
