Batman. Without question. The next 11 issues will be wonderfully self-contained also, so you won't have to worry about buying extra tie-ins.
I gave Layman a three-issue trial on Detective. He didn't pass. Judging on some of the critical reviews not from CV (where everybody gets 4-5 stars), it's only been a marginal improvement over Tony Daniel.
Batman. With my whole heart, I say Batman.
Also:
Batman. But honestly if there is any batman book other than Batman that you should be getting its Batman and Robin its the second best batman book

So has Detective Comics improved? I dropped it ages ago during that Penguin arc.
