Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.

We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.

Avengers vs. X-Men #10

No Caption Provided

We’ve come to the final few issues of Marvel’s latest event. Since the series kicked into higher gear with issue #6, AvX has been a rather fun romp. Issue #9, in particular, was a highlight with its focus on Spider-Man. Here’s hoping Ed Brubaker, who’s writing this week’s issue, can keep this series going at its current pace.

Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1

No Caption Provided

Finally! So far we’ve had our fair share of the Minutemen, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl and Ozymandias, but Rorschach and Doctor Manhattan have been left off the playing field. That is until this week. Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermajo’s Rorschach #1 finally sees the light of day and judging from the preview art we’ve seen in months past, this series is shaping up to be something awesome.

Bloodshot #2

No Caption Provided

Valiant Entertainment’s universe relaunch has been spectacular. Between X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong and Bloodshot, Valiant has been at the top of their game. With Bloodshot #2, Duane Swierczynski and Manuel Garcia continue the adventures of the killing machine known as Bloodshot, who is waking up in a body bag surrounded by the toughest soldiers on the planet, 35,000 feet in the sky. For Bloodshot, starting off your day does not mean eating a balanced breakfast.

Captain Marvel #2

No Caption Provided

The first issue of Kelly Sue Deconnick and Dexter Soy’s Captain Marvel series was a refreshing read. The characterization was great and the artwork fit the series well – even though it was in stark contrast to the series’ cover art. With issue #2, Deconnick and Soy are introducing the Banshee Squadron. We say: bring it on!

Daredevil #17

No Caption Provided

There’s rarely a month where Daredevil isn’t featured on this list. With that said, this month’s issue is truly a special occasion: Mike Allred will be joining Mark Waid for a special standalone issue spotlighting Stilt-Man. We’re huge fans of Allred’s work around here (G-Man especially), so we’ve obviously been waiting for this issue for some time. Make sure you pick this one up.

Fatale #7

No Caption Provided

The second arc of this series kicked off in style with last month’s Fatale #6. Now, Josephine’s story continues in 1970s Hollywood. If you like a healthy balance of crime and occult magic, then give Fatale a shake. This series is quite good.

Green Lantern #12

No Caption Provided

The return of the Black Hand continues in Green Lantern #12. Judging from what we saw in Blackest Night and the last few issues of Green Lantern, Black Hand is one twisted S.O.B. It seems like Geoff Johns really has a fun time writing the character. And with Doug Mahnke’s art to supplement, you know this latest story arc is going to be twisted.

Saga #6

No Caption Provided

What left is there to be said about Saga’s greatness? This series has delivered with every single issue, so we don’t foresee anything changing this month with issue #6. After the gut-punching cliffhanger of last month, things are sure to heat up for everyone involved in this story.

The Victories #1

No Caption Provided

Michael Avon Oeming kicks off a brand new series focusing on six heroes sworn to protect the innocent from the evils of the world. That might sound generic, but Oeming’s stylings in both the writing and art game make this is a series worth checking out for at least its first issue.

Uncanny X-Force #29

No Caption Provided

The latest story running through Uncanny X-Force is grim. For those reading it, that’s probably an understatement, actually. Key characters are biting the dust left and right, yet we can’t turn away (what does that say about us?). In fact, Uncanny X-Force has once again reached the level of brilliance we saw during The Dark Angel Saga. And that’s saying a lot. If you want some epic super hero action, this is it.

AvX 10, Batwoman 12, and Amazing Spider Man 691 for sure.

I wish Captain Marvel had a better cover artist... Covers are supposed to be enticing, not ugly.

I'm getting Green Lantern and Nightwing.

I kinda would like Saga, but I worried I wouldn't like it and as always I want Uncanny X-Force, but I have to wait to get the first trade.

I'm so far behind on most of these series that I will just wait for the trades (AvX, Uncanny X-Force). I do think I will grab Daredevil, since it's a one off issue and I am also a big fan of Allred.

Unfortunately, Doug Mahnke is not doing the art for GL #12. The artists are Jim Calafiore and Renato Guedes.

So, here's the list in order of magnificence (more or less):

  1. Alabaster: Wolves #5
    Get this.
  2. Revival #2
First issue was very good. Surprised this didn't make it onto the official list.
  3. Saga #6
By now a must-read. Fantastic art and story.
  4. Garth Ennis Jennifer Blood #15
Pass this if it isn't your kind of comic book. I'll understand. I like it though.
  5. Uncanny X-Force #29
Imo the best Marvel series for now.
  6. Bloodshot #2
First issue was promising. Let's see about this one.
  7. Captain Marvel #2
One of the few comics where the cover art is actually worse than the art inside.
  8. Before Watchmen Rorschach #1
Ozymandias #2was actually not so bad, so I'm looking forward to my favorite character just a little. Shame on you DC it you mess this up.
  9. Daredevil #17
Daredevil hasn't been as good as everyone seems to think for me.
  10. Deadpool Kills Marvel Universe #3 (of 4)
Well, It's mindless fun to read so why not? Even if "why?" seems to be around the corner.
  11. Everybody Loves Tank Girl #2 (of 3)
I recommended #1 last month, forgot to get it though. Might get them both this week if i remember.^^

This time only one #1 issue I won't put on the list:

  • Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories #1

The preview for Uncanny X-Force is INSANE. I can't wait to see what happens with a particular psychic in The Days of Preemptive Future, and apparently #30 will focus on Genesis which I can't wait for.

I want to start getting Saga, but with twenty comics on my pull list I really can't afford it.

It is such a great week for comics!

I am so much looking forward to Captain Marvel, Saga, Uncanny X-Force, Fatale, Daredevil, and Avengers vs. X-Men!

I am also excited that I finally align with CV's weekly picks. ;)

X-Force - SAGA - Daredevil + AvX for me.

jcbart: i would suggest you make an exception for SAGA . I had to drop a few books as well, but it is worth it. It is such an exceptional book.
