DC Comics Announces Next Weekly Event: CONVERGENCE

We've known for some time that something big was coming up at DC Comics. With what's been happening in the weekly THE NEW 52: FUTURES END and EARTH 2: WORLD’S END series, we've been seeing the build up for some big shake ups. Throw in other strange images (as in SUPERMAN: DOOMED #2 or FUTURES END: BOOSTER GOLD) and many have been left scratching their heads. DC has finally released some details to what's coming up, via USA Today.

CONVERGENCE begins on April 1, 2015.

You can see there are some strangely familiar faces. In the image above, pencils are by Carlo Pagulayan, inks by Jose Marzan Jr, and colors by Hi-Fi Colour. Different versions of characters we know are present here. CONVERGENCE will be an 8-part series and 40 brand-new 2-part miniseries while the main books go on hiatus (so DC Comics can move from their New York office to their Burbank one). The main weekly series will be written by veteran TV writer Jeff King. Various writers and artists will take on the miniseries which will exam "the worlds of the DC Universe over the decades, as well as the heroes and villains contained within."

Co-publisher Dan DiDio said the following:

"It captures the full essence and scope of DC's incredible history and storytelling. There is a story and a character for every generation of DC Comics fan."

The story deals with Brainiac having trapped cities from various timelines and planets that have ended. He plans on conducting an experiment and has brought the different cities to a planet outside of time and space in order to discover what happens when all the inhabitants meet.

"We're picking up at points of their lives where we left them and finding out what's gone on with them since then."

Another thing this event will do is answer readers' questions as to what previous continuity counts and which doesn't. Where are certain characters that we haven't seen since the New 52 started? Co-Publisher Jim Lee said the following:

"What we're really addressing is they all exist and have existed and exist within the framework of the New 52. Convergence is in many ways the most meta epic event we've done."

DC has added, on their blog, that this will take place "outside of time and space—on the question mark, just below Earth 29 and above Chaos, on the Map of the Multiverse—and introducing the new villain—Telos, this massive event will be published throughout April and May."

Are you ready for this? Will we get all the answers we've been waiting for?

This could either be horrible or great, depending on execution. Am i hyped? Naah.

One word: Hypertime.

Yeah probably not going to be another full reboot or reversal back to Pre New 52 canon. Most likely, it'll be some hypertime, out of continuity crossover between multiple worlds and timelines. Like Countdown. And now I'm put off from buying it even more.

This could be good. They're basically taking Grant Morrison's idea of DC continuity and running with it, and I'm okay with that.

One of the hallmarks of DC has been the popularization of a "multiverse" of parallel worlds of familiar characters, and that has led to many story lines involve multiverse

2015 is also 30th anniversary of Crisis of Infinite Earths which is Mother of all events

There's an edgy 90's universe with Azbats, Para-Hal,Steel-Supes, and hook hand Aquaman?

So DC is gonna put their entire line on hiatus for two months while they do this? That sounds like a recipe for disaster, but then again, it worked for Futures End month...

Mmmm...nah. I rather save my money and fill in the gaps in my Grell run. I'm not into buying weekly books. If Ollie gets one of these two issue minis and the creative team is on point, then we'll see.

@abdullahzubair: it's been announced in a couple of interviews.

I seriously doubt that they'll be using this to revert to the old continuity, but I wouldn't be surprised if they use this as a way to re-integrate characters that haven't yet shown up in the New 52 that people have been wanting.

All in all, I think I'll read the "Five developments in Convergence" post on Comic Vine when it gets put up in May and I'll skip the event itself.

I'll wait to see what the name of all the mini series will be, before I decide whether or not I'm going to buy this.

Seems more like filler while DC moves from NYC to Burbank, but if some of the stories has characters that I've always wanted to see in the new 52 (Jade Lantern, Donna Troy, the new Teen Titans) I'll invest when appropriate.

That being said, if I were DC, I would not advertise Scott Lobdell's involvement in the project.

This is going to be epic.

This won't be a reboot but I fully expect it to result in the blending of various aspects of the DC multiverse. I guess that would constitute a "soft reboot." The New 52 will still be canon but we may get different versions of characters as a result of this. For instance, I wouldn't be surprised if all this Future's End, World's End, and Convergence stuff leads to the return of the JSA as it was previously known. As for the actual event, I find it hard to get excited about anything that has Scott Lobdell's name on it. As a pretty big fan of DC, I keep hoping they'll up their game but I've been feeling more and more pessimistic about it. This announcement doesn't really help.

@lagozzino: they kinda have to move is bound to be hectic and it would in theory be easier to do a few weeks of out of continuity stories so as to not risk anything insane slipping last the editors and the like.
