DC Announces Eight New Mini-Series including METAL MEN and POISON IVY

DC made the announcement today that in early 2016, that well be launching eight new six-issue miniseries to bring in some fan favorite characters via USA Today. This is to "reposition" the characters for the future and each of these books will have help from the original creators as well.

Len Wein will be coming back to both METAL MEN and SWAMP THING. Wein brought Swamp Thing to life back in 1972 in SWAMP THING #1. Wein will also be writing the Metal Men mini-series as well. That team first appeared in SHOWCASE #37, back in 1962, and the team actually has appeared in the post-FLASHPOINT DCU.

Mike W Barr comes back to Katana in her new series. Katana first appeared in DC SAMPLER #1 back in 1983. The series will be called KATANA: CULT OF THE KOBRA. While Len Wein wrote a Swamp Thing story during CONVERGENCE, Barr has not written a Katana story in quite some time.

Gerry Conway is taking on FIRESTORM and Marv Wolfman will be writing RAVEN. Wolfman talked about the character and connection to younger fans.

"When I go to comic conventions it thrills me to see all the young fans cosplaying as Raven from the Teen Titans GO! cartoon show... Because so many comic fans are boys, it's wonderful that there's something about her that connects with both girls and boys."

Writer Amy Chu, who has been working on SENSATION COMICS: WONDER WOMAN, takes on Poison Ivy in POISON IVY: CYCLE OF LIFE AND DEATH, and DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras said the book takes Poison Ivy in a new direction. In addition, Aaron Lopresti will be writing METAMORPHO and Keith Giffen puts a grown-up spin on SUGAR & SPIKE, which reintroduces Sugar Plumm and Cecil "Spike" Wilson, who are not spoiled kids anymore. They will be working as private detectives that superheroes can handle.

These books will be available in early 2016.

Pretty interesting idea. I guess DC gave up on trying to have its B-list characters carry ongoing series, and it is going to see if they can carry miniseries now. Probably a smarter approach.

I am so excited for Metal Men, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the possible movie.

This excites me a lot, I've wanted Metal Men since they've been in Justice League and I love the chance to jump on to new characters or have a fresh start on them. Like itd be cool to be reintroduced to Katana since all I've read is a few issues of her solo book.

I am glad that DC is giving Katana a new chance. It´s good that DC is taking risk and give some fan servisse with theses mini-series and not giving another Superman or Batman tittle. I think Beast Boy and Black Lightning might be in next wave.

Man Firestorm is such a waster of a character in DC. He has so much potential.It must be hard to writer his comics.

Agreed. I liked that they kept trying to get unpopular characters going at the launch of the DCNU, but it lead to a lot of cancellations. The mini-series hedges their bets. If it does poorly, no great loss and some fans of the characters still get some service. If it does well, you can always make it an ongoing series.

Oh man oh man! DC keeps making my wallet cry! I want to try all of these new minis :) Especially Firestorm, Raven, Metamorpho, and Metal Men.

Also, I'm confused, are they bringing back Swamp Thing, or just saying that the writer of Metal Men worked on Swamp Thing back in the day?

Metamorpho and the Metal Men intrigue me a lot. The last I saw of Rex was in The Outsiders.

I haven't really paid much attention to Firestorm since Dr. Stein left the earth to be the fire elemental (I know...I'm ssssoooo far behind) so I'm nervous as to what how this will pan out. The others don't have my interest at all.

Meh, only Swamp Thing draws my eye here, but that'll be trade-wait if anything.

Raven, metamorpho, poison ivy, and metal men all seem cool. I hope they give raven a new design. I hate her bird helmet thing she has in teen titans

I really like the idea of DC giving short miniseries With different characters. The writers they have tapped I'm more mixed on, but will see.

Great seeing Metal Men getting a miniseries.

Hope Firestorm is good. The last attempt just didn't get me excited at all. Metal Men sounds good, I like how Johns handled them in Justice League.

Bit sad there's no Shazam mini-series... Maybe they'll announce an ongoing title? (I can dream can't I?)

Interesting to see the Poison Ivy book and like that Raven is getting some love. How about Shazam? Anyone?

Smart approach by DC. Some good creative teams there. Where are these "younger fans, boys, girls" they're talking about? They may go to conventions but I sure don't see younger readers in Comic shops. DC is still clinging to the notion that they'll get new young readers, not with books at 4 bucks a pop.

It's about damn time Ivy has a book.
