LOL.
Images uploading sideways
@dboyrules2011: Sure, you find it funny.
There's 11 images I can't post in my newest blog until this is fixed.
@xwraith: Oh well I'm not sure if I should post on it then, because it's not completed.
Found a way around the bug, and it might not even be CV's problem. Feel free to lock or delete the thread.
@pikahyper: I deleted the ones that came out that way, but I'll repost one of them.
@xwraith: weird mine looks fine the whole time, your original image is fine as well so it is just resized images that are created by the site, when you insert the image what size are you using: small, medium, large and what alignment: right, left, center and what browser are you using?
@pikahyper: I'm using large with center alignment on Firefox. The problem isn't that it's being posted sideways, but if I upload it from my desktop it gets turned that way.
@xwraith: never mind, I downloaded your image and reuploaded it and it turned sideways, that is a problem with the exif info attached to the images, most likely cause is that at some point someone rotated the image using windows explorer via the right click option for images, I believe doing so will add invalid exif info so the image will display correctly in most applications but not all so when the site "reads" these images and creates resized versions they are rotating like the original. Easiest way to fix images that are messed up is to open them in an image viewer and then "save as" them overwriting the original and it should be fixed.
@pikahyper: I tried that and re-uploaded it, but it's still not oriented properly. I can also say the image was definitely not rotated because I took it myself.
@pikahyper: I used a mobile device camera (which I rarely do).
@xwraith: I've had to deal with this a few times in the past with images given to me by clients, usually what happens is they take a picture with a camera or cell phone and then when they move the image to their computer they see that it is sideways cause they held the device sideways or upside down and then they use explorer to rotate it and then send it to me. Maybe your device added some incorrect exif data or something but I know for sure it is your images, might just be some fluke with that device. Try downloading that first test image I uploaded, the comic art one, and reupload it and see if it rotates, if it does that could mean there is a problem with your computer and that it is modifying/screwing up images you put on it, really weird but not impossible.
@pikahyper: I tried it with that one, and it uploaded correctly.
@pikahyper: Not exactly, but I had a similar problem the last time I posted images I'd taken with one of my own cameras.
@pikahyper: Yes, that's how I import them. There's three things I think are worth mentioning:
-This didn't start until after I upgraded to Windows 10.
-I've posted several of the same images to Flickr, without this problem.
-I've discovered that when I right-click the image I posted earlier and select "open in new tab", it displays properly.
@pikahyper: usb?
You upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 didn't you? You are not alone but it is a feature not a bug :P there is actually a setting in Windows that auto rotates images when they are imported onto the computer so they display in landscape, it is enabled starting in 8.1 and since you can't upgrade from 8 to 10 you must have gone from 7 to 10, discussion and possible fix.
@pikahyper: The computer I use started with 8.1. I upgraded to 10 from that.
@pikahyper: I'm looking for a way to turn it off, but I can't seem to find one.
@xwraith: is the device plugged in while you look? I'm guessing it will only show when it is connected and it'll either be in the Control Panel under Devices and Printers or Autoplay related, or if you are using the Settings app maybe under Devices in the Connected devices, AutoPlay or USB sections. I don't have anything to test with even though I have two Windows 10 computers now. It also might be buried in the actual Photo app but I removed that a while ago.
@xwraith: found it, I attached my Android phone as a camera, go into Explorer under This PC and right click the device and select Import Pictures and Video, it'll search the device and then display a results screen, in the bottom left corner click More options and that is where you change the import settings, rotate on import is listed towards the bottom.
@pikahyper: I just tried that and uploaded an image to test it, and it's still doing it.
@pikahyper: You're sure it's not a problem with Comic Vine?
@pikahyper: I tried rotating the image manually to see if it would rotate to proper orientation when I uploaded it, but it still didn't do it. The problem seems to be that it can't upload vertically-oriented images from my desktop properly.
@pikahyper: I keep trying, but absolutely nothing I do works.
@pikahyper: That explains it. I don't have any of those.
@pikahyper: That's what I use to import, yes, but I prefer the older Photo Viewer to actually display my images.
@xwraith: give faststone a shot, world of difference, fully customizable browser and viewer, multiple skins/themes, built in slideshow, built in basic image editing, built in scanner software, works with raw images and most proprietary camera file types, built in importer from cameras, dual monitor support, batch converter, batch renamer, extremely light weight and faster then any other image viewer I've used.
