Although we can now use GIFs as avatars, and that we can change the shape of avatars to make them much, much longer, it would appear that it has an expiration date.
That is to say, your bigger avatar or GIF avatar will remain big or animate for only so long before returning to normal. It usually lasts a day or so.
In the case of GIFs avatars, they revert to a still image.
In the case of large avatars, they revert to the default square shape.
In order for it to continue functioning, you have to go to the settings and repick the same avatar and save, and then it starts working again.
Basically, these special avatars automatically turn back to normal after a period of time.
