Rules and Conditions
- Bear is a fully grown, large, well fed male
- Five Hyenas, all male, peak size and health
- Both are out for blood
- Takes place in a meadow near a river
- Neither will flee
An African Lion can scare a whole pride of Hyena's, 5 are not taking the bear down IMO.
This. Fully grown kodiak bear > Male lion
Male lion's are capable of taking multiple hyenas at once however the hyena's often run away. If they are unable to flee and were all to attack a male lion as a group, five hyenas could possibly beat a male lion. But a kodiak bear, especially a fully grown one, would win here.
The meadow might provide some cover for the hyena's and they have incredibly powerful jaws but i don't see them getting to a vulnerable part on the bear before he kills them all.
The bear is definitely injured though.
The balance of power is generally 3-4 hyenas per full grown male lion. Keep in mind those are not peak or bloodlusted, which they are here. Hyenas can reach around 200 pounds at their largest. I don't think this is that one sided. Brown (Grizzly/Kodiak) Bears are my favorite animal, but hyenas bloodlusted and peak aren't going down easily. I'd probably say the bear is around 1,200-1,400 pounds. Both are bulky carnivores designed for killing.

this is male hyena, not female. Keep in mind that very large hyenas have to sacrifice their agility due to bulkiness. Not to forget that 1 bite = 1 paw swipe = dead hyena (or atleast incapacitated)
Hyenas do have crazy durability, but against a pretador of this size, it is useless. Also, they have much bigger claws (upto 5") than a lion, with much more strength to back up, and a lot more durability.
Also Kodiak bears often take on packs of wolves, Hyena=wolf imo.
I think if it was 10 hyenas then the bear is going down. If the bear was trying to kill rather than scare of the hyenas though then it would take one decent bite or a couple of paw swipes to kill them.
5 male hyenas would die.
Female spotted hyenas are bigger and stronger.
However, I still can't see 5 female spotted hyenas doing anything to a Kodiak bear.
Make the numbers 10 female spotted hyenas, and then they'll beat the Kodiak bear. Less than that, they're dead.
