It's likely you've heard the news about the identity of who the next Robin will be after Robin Rises. Damian Wayne was killed in BATMAN INCORPORATED #8, which was released in February 2013. It's hard to believe he's been dead for so long. But with December's ROBIN RISES: ALPHA, we will actually get to see who becomes the next Robin.

As we've seen Tim Drake, Jason Todd, and even Barbara Gordon come into the story along with the New 52 introduction of Carrie Kelley and Stephanie Brown, we were left wondering who would be the next Robin.

No Caption Provided

When ROBIN RISES was first announced, Peter Tomasi immediately made it clear we'd have "a" Robin again.

"Let’s just say that we are most definitely bringing back a Robin for Batman’s 75th anniversary."

No Caption Provided

We thought we'd have to wait until December but DC's solicitations for their January titles were released this week and the info for BATMAN AND ROBIN #38 says it all. DC released a cropped version of the cover, seen here, but Peter Tomasi posted the full cover on his Twitter page.

I've stalled long enough. If you managed to avoid the spoilers and still don't want to know, you shouldn't be reading this far. This is your last chance to look away.

The Robin that will be returning to Batman's side is Damian Wayne. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise. We know his body was taken by Ra's al Ghul. Even though he wasn't immediately revived in a Lazarus Pit, Ra's put the Chaos Shard in his coffin, which has drawn the attention of Darkseid. Damian's body has been taken to Apokolips and we can assume being there and the power of the Chaos Shard being able to defy the laws of physics and reality will somehow bring Damian back.

But it won't necessarily be the same Damian we knew.

According to the solicit for BATMAN AND ROBIN #38, Batman will have to deal with Damian now having superpowers. This is one area where the Dynamic Duo will have a new...dynamic.

You could only imagine what Bruce would do if Damian came back exactly how he was before he was killed. Damian has proven time and time again he is more than capable of taking on rooms full of dangerous villains. But the last thing Bruce would want would be to see his son die again. He went through an extremely tough time. He was protective and paranoid before Damian's death due to the bounty Talia put on his head. Having him return from the dead would likely cause Bruce to keep him locked up in some deep corner of the Batcave.

No Caption Provided

The idea of a super-powered Robin doesn't seem right. It is different. That's what makes this something more than the simple return of a Robin. We've seen that before with Jason Todd. If Damian came back and everything went back to normal, that would make the months of stories and grieving feel wasted. This isn't just Damian returning, it's super-Damian. Batman is going to have a whole new set of headaches coming his way.

Bruce's natural instinct will be to protect or even ground Robin (again). Damian is known for running off half-cocked. If he has super-powers, how will Batman be able to stop him? Well, we know he always finds a way to come up with contingency plans but with his son being the opposition, it'll make things more difficult.

Batman will have to keep a close eye on Damian now. Damian has, in the past, killed the bad guys with no remorse. Having more abilities, it'll take all of Batman's rules and outlook against crime to stop Damian from doing what his instincts and lifelong training, in the League of Assassins, have taught him. Will Batman be able to keep him in check?

The other question is what state will Damian be in when he returns? How much of his death, and whatever came after, does he remember? Will he remember the pain and possible nothingness of dying? Will he be afraid to jump into dangerous situations out of fear of dying once again?

What's more likely is Damian, as a young 10 or 11-year-old, will think he's indestructible now. He died and managed to come back, better than before. The idea of Batman and Robin has always been Robin being the sidekick. Batman will always have the edge in being "Batman" but partnering with a young and potentially powerful 'sidekick' will be something new and different for him. He's worked with the Justice League for years but he hasn't really been partners with them. As much respect as he may have for Damian, he likely wouldn't see him as an equal partner.

Also, what will be Damian's reaction to Dick Grayson being "dead"? Will Bruce tell him the truth or will Damian blame his father for allowing him, Dick, and Jason all to die on his watch? That could add even more tension between the two.

Then again, maybe his powers will just be temporary.

No Caption Provided

The Dynamic Duo is about to see a change in how they operate. With Damian's return and the arrogance he had in abundance before, seeing the two work together is going to be pretty interesting. Batman would have his hands full with a normal ten-year-old raised by assassins. Having that same kid, now with super-powers, is going to add a huge number of complications.

I still want Damian to stay dead because I miss when Tim was Bruce's partner. Who wouldn't read have a Batman and Red Rbion ongoing series?

I don't mind Robin having superhuman abilities, but I wish they didn't kill Damian in order to accomplish that. Comic book writers should be able to accomplish things while avoiding convoluted death and revival.

I will be disappointed if Damian doesn't make loads of facetious cometary upon his revival. His personality demands that he make jokes about death now.

Congrats to Damian Fan's. I have no real opinion on his revival and the turn of events being he has powers now. Apparently, A LOT of people are digging it.

@lurkero: Agreed but it's not really the case here. Damian was supposed to die at the end of the 4 issue mini-series Batman and Son where he first appeared but Grant Morrison liked the character and kept him around and killed him off later. I believe Grant said he wanted him dead but it seems DC has decided to step in and bring him back. I don't think this is really a writer thing as much as editorial.

@illo_29: Every big commercial comic book writer knows that corporate is unlikely to keep a character dead, so why even bother with death? The media likely won't talk about comic books unless there is some big change coming, and that usually means a character is dying, reviving, or shifting positions. Damian's new abilities could have been provided without killing him.

I'm guessing Damian will have a healing factor as his new superpower. It would make for a tense story dynamic as Batman forbids Damian from fighting crime anymore, Damian disobeys his father's wishes, follows him on patrol and gets hurt/shot by a lucky criminal. Only to learn he can heal from the damage far more quickly than any ordinary human can. If nothing else, it would test how much Damian can take and might still keep Bruce fearful that Damian will take on more than he can handle.

Great article Tony, I think this is going to be a very interesting dynamic for the dynamic duo. I haven't been reading Batman and Robin, but now this makes me think about picking it up.

I just hope Damian doesn't hate Bruce because Jason stopped hating him and the thought they needed a villian robin.

Good article but there's no way Bruce would keep Damian in a corner if he came back just how he was. And I hope he doesn't tell Damian about dick being alive. Basically an FU to the rest of the bat family

I think this sounds like a lot of fun!

Plus, I don't believe Damian would resent Bruce for not being there when he died. Even Jason wasn't upset that Bruce wasn't there, just that he still allowed the Joker to live.

With 'super powers', Robin may relate more to Superman; even sympathise with him. In fact, Robin may seek the likes of Superman out for 'fatherly' guidance/influence, which would undoubtedly annoy Batman. That would certainly add extra tension between Bruce & Clark!

Or maybe Robin will seek a peer out in Shazam, who himself is another kid with powers. Imagine: Two immature kids with superpowers roaming the planet, trying to eliminate evil - we thought Superman & Diana were juvenile storming into politically charged situations... and they're "adults"!

And if Shazam is a member of the Justice League, surely Robin will demand a place too, especially in light of the way the world fell apart in Forever Evil without him being around!

Following that thought, if he were turned down from The Justice League, he may join The Teen Titans. Would be interesting to see a power-struggle between Tim Drake and Damien Wayne in that setting. And with Damien assuming the helm (which he might), you could potentially set up Justice League v. Teen Titans, a real battle of the generations.

I wonder how Jason Todd feels about this. If it's been addressed, I've missed it. Must annoy him to see that Bruce made such an effort to bring Damian back, but not him. This should really strain their relationship much more.

Over the last few decades this has become an editorial running gag at the readers' expense.

Another dumb money grabbing ploy with a now pointless death from the revolving door of comic book afterlife.

As a batfan it pains me both in my heart and my wallet when this type of Strategic Hurtful Irrational Tiding happens and it happens all too often!! Whatever happened to a good story with good art? Whatever happened to the stand alone story that did fit within the confines of the universe? Why did event after event after crossover after crossover become acceptable?

These questions will never be answered, well not to me as I am just a lowly comic purchaser. DC (or any other company for that matter) don't answer to me...except that they do! My money, along with whoever else is buying, keeps them going until the next movie/action figure line/tv series etc comes along. My opinion DOES matter but only when it is heard in conjuction with other irrate, fed up fans who loudly, politely and often voice their dislike at the Strategic Hurtful Irrational Tiding's they dish up upon our favourite characters.

My lone voice on a fan site is not enough to change their mind, especially not during an anniversary year for him of the cape and cowl.

If you also are annoyed at these type of Strategic Hurtful Irrational Tiding's that plague comic books then please write to your publisher and express this concern and maybe, just maybe we'll be heard.

Thank you for your time, I return you to memes and such

I'm in the same boat as you. We know Marvel just killed off Wolverine. We'll have the next year of those close to him lament his passing. Then, shocl & awe, Wolvie returns, in full health, ready to kick butt. Sorry, death as a revolving door was the last straw for me. I bet the Mavel and DC entities of Death are having massive migranes.

I want the next Marvel and DC event to be "Death kills Everyone!!".
