    The Good

FOREVER EVIL #7 does plenty of things well, even though there was a delay between this and the last issue. It provides a fun, action-packed issue that leaves readers in suspense. Sure, by the end of the issue, you're pretty sure everything is going to go back to normal, or some relative form of normal, but there's twists and turns along the way to keep the reader interested and invested in the future of DC, including that insane final page.

The book is very Lex Luthor-centric and almost feels like a jumping off point for that character to have his own book. Luthor is extremely fleshed out here through his actions and the narrative driven by his inner-monologue. As long as you have this in your mind, going in, the book moves much smoother and there's no room for confusion.

As far as fanboyism go, there's a TON of stuff to be excited over. First and foremost, it's the first appearance of Ted Kord, who is wearing a very familiar shirt. This leads to many possibilities in the future, including the return of Blue & Gold. That would be pretty dang awesome. The final page marks the return of another character who could lead the DCU into a Crisis. Finally, Luthor knows who Batman is. Again, this has tons of possibilities in the future and could make for some very interesting storytelling.

The art through this book is just as you'd expect: great to look at and tells the story well, visually. Artist David Finch, inker Richard Friend, and colorist Sonia Oback do a fine job at keeping each panel easy to read, clear, and great to look at. Friend's inks are light and not over-powering, and he gets some great depth and texture in things like capes and faces. Finch normally puts out some great work and this is more of the same. He puts out some great art here.

    The Bad

FOREVER EVIL has done a fantastic job at shifting who Captain Cold is, along with some other villains, and by the end of this, everything just goes to normal for them. The idea that these "villains" came together to save the world was a really moving part of this story, but after all is said and done, they just go back to being criminals, especially Captain Cold? (A villain with a code or law who could easily become a hero) It seems like all that there was a lot of build-up and great character development with these guys that ultimately gets thrown away, except for Lex Luthor.

This book really should be called LEX LUTHOR because that's who Johns chose to revolve this book around, and that's fine, but in doing so, he makes other characters look like chumps, which is very out of character for said characters.... mainly Batman. He pick-pockets Batman during the issue. It's a small, but unbelievable point.

Dick says "where?" when Owlman is telling Dick he's not giving up on being a team. It makes no sense. This happens towards the beginning of the issue and is NEVER tied up. Considering that Dick being kidnapped and demasked was a MAJOR part of this storyline, you'd think their would be more closure with this, right?

This next paragraph has no barring on the final rating of the book. Because of the long delay for this issue and because a few books are already in post-FE mode, there were a lot of spoilers for readers, like Lex Luthor being a part of the Justice League, and solicits spoiling what happens to Dick Grayson. There are plenty of surprises aside from that, so don't worry.

    The Verdict

There's a lot about FOREVER EVIL that was disappointing, even within this delayed issue, but all-in-all, FOREVER EVIL #7 delivers an action-packed, fun issue that does a fine job at telling an over-arcing story. It's a really fun book that will get readers excited about the future of the DCU, but you cannot forget the fact that it leaves loose ends dangling in the wind, especially Dick Grayson. The art is fantastic and the Luthor-driven narrative is well written, but it feels like there's a lot of spite in the writing towards the Bat-characters of the DC Universe. Overall, I recommend this issue though. It is a very fun book with some big problems.

I would have given this a three too. One star off for the weak Dick/Owlman closure and another for the miscolor of Dick's boots (his boots are colored red). You'd think after the long delay such a glaring color issue would've been caught. Still loved every moment we got with Luthor. I am satisfied with the issue overall. Just reminding future posters, a 3 star review doesn't mean @inferiorego hated the book guys... He just thought that it was good but with a few glaring issues. Don't give him grief over this please.

Finch's art was never good and I'm not surprised by this rating. We got spoiled by other books, Luthor centric (wich is not bad, but in detriment of other characters is what makes this a no) everything back to normal and the eternal delay! And the worst part is that I'm buying it anyway!! Ugh!

I really enjoyed this issue. I had literally zero expectations but there was a big grin on my face every time I flipped the page. Yeah, you kind of have to take anything Bat-related Johns does with a grain of salt, but this was a wonderful ode to Sex Luthor.

@ultimatesmfan: agree ! I love batman but cmon guys I've read alot of Johns batman and you honestly cant say he writes him like a fool...take off those hatershades and enjoy it for what it is .

edit : if anything he just downplays the entire batman is pretty much invincible bs by making him more HUMAN, notice his reaction to dicks apparent death? that is the reaction of a father losing his son before his very eyes. he was seconds away from killing luthor, to paraphrase lex "everything went black"

The 'Where...?' part with Dick confused me, but after looking at it a few times, Owlman throws a smoke grenade and disappears, so 'Where...?' probably should have been extended with at least a 'He' on the end of it to make the situation make a bit more sense to what actually going on.

Not to start anything but Lex Luthor was always better than batman, at least in terms of pure genius.

i think its common knowledge that lex is smarter, but that doesnt have to make batman inadequate.

in johns JL run batman has done next to nothing, he seems to be there so a character has someone to argue with

@inferiorego A thing about the review. This wasn't the son of Ted Kord but TedKord himself.

In an earlier issue, during a helicopter scene, we saw his father, who I'm almost positive was named Ted Kord as well. He died.

I could be wrong about the name though. I don't have the issue handy,.

Sinestro had Parallax, why didn't he solo? The lightning rod just seems silly now. Still, it gets 9/10 from me.

Normally no, but this issue has been delayed for a while. There's at least 30 issues of New 52 Nightwing out for the colorist to take reference from. I just thought that such a glaring color error could have been easily avoided.

In all honesty, as I was reading the book I started with five and gradually went down to a three. I felt it was a bit fast (for my taste) to see how everything concluded, but having the whole issue centered around Luthor was great.

The last panel got me hyped cause it was something I predicted and there were a couple hints at it throughout the arc. Overall I was satisfied with the story and so I give the entire storyline (not the issue) a 4-4.5/5.

I've really enjoyed this series as a Lex Luthor book but maybe less so as an actual DC event book. I agree that the title should have been different (using the word 'Forever' in DC? tsk tsk). It turned out to be rather uneventful in a lot of ways in terms of affecting DC continuity but pretty awesome in showing some of the cooler classic villains in a different light. And I have to admit there were some pretty great reveals at the end. Finch's art was a bit rough in spots but I can't not like that gritty tone he gave this series. The whole way through I kind of pictured Lex with Kelsey Grammer's Sideshow Bob voice. It just sounds right in my head even though there are many great voice performers who have portrayed Luthor through the years. I think I liked this issue a little more than Mat but I can see where he's coming from. This reads like a fair review to me.

He did have Parallax, he gives it up some time after this event. The suit is an indicator, he changes back into his normal one in Sinesto #1.

    • Wished the whole Dick Grayson's identity subplot would've had more closure.
    • Went "aww" at Bizarro hugging Luthor.
    • Sinestro was a beast throughout this entire arc. Him moving the moon with Black Adam was also a cool feat.
    • Batman still didn't do anything useful.
    • I actually liked how Luthor was portrayed in this event.

They shouldn't have delayed this book cause we already know what's going to happen in the end. Either way, pretty good series focusing on the villains.

The Antimonitor is so going to destroy Earth 2 and then come to the Prime Earth or whatever it's called in March 2015.

    Wow:

    Outsmarting opponents with superpowers

    Stealthily stealing equipment

Coming up with morally ambiguous solutions

Geoff you changed my mind you really do know how to write Bat.... Oh wait.

My usual whining about nerfing Batman aside thought, this issue was pretty good. I enjoyed the action, it was clever and that Bat/Wonder moment gives me hope it'll be a thing in the future.
