Wilma Flintstone

Wilma Flintstone is the wife of Fred Flintstone and best friend of neighbors Betty and Barney Rubble. She is always seen wearing her pearl necklace and cavewife dress. She has beady black eyes. During the end credits of most episodes, Fred is locked out and she never hears him when he shouts for her. Her best friend is Betty Rubble, the wife of Fred's best friend, Barney Rubble. Though no age is ever given, all four of them appear to be somewhere in their late twenties in the original television series, adults but still a little unseasoned by life and occasionally prone to daydreams, fan crushes on popular movie stars, and youthful misadventures.

Wilma is the more passionate and assertive of the four. Her deep love for husband Fred is obvious, but she never hesitates to let him know when he has gone too far in one of his get-rich-quick schemes or has let his enthusiasm turn him into a bully where his best friend Barney is concerned. Her "mama bear" protectiveness has inspired her to punch out dinosaurs that have threatened her husband or daughter. Because the original Flintstones series is a parody of 1950s America as depicted in 1950s domestic sitcoms, Wilma has full social approval to break down into tears every once in a while when Fred has been particularly thoughtless or reckless. She is just as prone as anyone else her age to losing her temper, jumping to conclusions, and the occasional pang of jealousy that a young wife or husband might experience once in a while. Betty and she often tease their husbands whenever Fred and Barney become disastrously cocky or recklessly naive (a fairly common occurence in a domestic sitcom such as The Flintstones).

In the original series continuity, Wilma Slaghoople and her best friend Betty Jean McBricker met their future husbands while working at a ritzy motel during one of their first summers after graduating from high school. Her courtship with Fred was a tumultuous one as two dominant personalities learned to co-exist out of love for each other. In later continuities, the four of them have known each other since children. The Flintstones series have never really attempted to follow a single continuity, so both origins are probably true.

During the original television series run, Wilma went through a pregnancy and eventually gave birth to Pebbles. In sequel television series, Wilma enters middle age (looking as youthful as ever) as daughter Pebbles Flintstone marries Bamm Bamm Rubble and, in one continuity, may have become a grandmother.

Like all the "cave people" of The Flintstones series, Wilma easily performs feats of strength that are superhuman by modern standards, including punching out dinosaurs, and would appear to have a low level of invulnerability compared to a modern human being. (This greater strength and toughness has been vaguely alluded to the few times that the Flintstones and Rubbles have travelled into the future to the modern day or even past that to the retrofuturistic days of the Jetsons).

In the live-action film the Flintstones (1994), she is played by Elizabeth Perkins, whereas in the live-action film the Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), she is played by Kristen Johnston.
