Vincent van Gogh may be most famous for being the painter who cut of a peace of his own ear during a rage filled episode in his depression.
The last years there has been some evidence that it was not he who cut the ear of, but a friend who was in conflict with him and that Vincent didn't want to bring him in any trouble with the law, thus being quit about it and telling people he did it himself.
Although these theories are acknowledged, Vincent cutting his own ear of is still the most widely believed theorie.
