Before she served on board Galactica, Kara Thrace was a flight instructor. While teaching at the academy, she got into a relationship with one of her students and despite her best efforts, she ended up falling in love with him. Unfortunately, Zak wasn't a very good pilot but she couldn't bring herself to fail him. Because of this, she passed him and shortly after graduating, he died on a routine mission. At the funeral, she met Commander Adama, the man who would have been her father-in-law had Zak not died. They bonded over the loss and over time he became the caring parent she never had growing up and in many ways she became the daughter he never had and the child he would have preferred his sons had been more like.

On New Caprica, she got drunk and slept with Lee Adama on the very plot of land she was planing on building a house with her boyfriend, Sam Anders. The next morning, feeling guilty, she ran off and eloped with Anders.

Katee Sackhoff played the role of Captain Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on the SyFy Channel Battlestar Galactica series which ran from 2004-2009. Strangely, in the original ABC version of Battlestar Galactica in 1978-79, the Starbuck character was male and was played by Dirk Benedict. It would seem that the switch in gender roles for the Starbuck character is an example of the increased role of women on both television and in society as a whole, from the 1970's to the 2000's.
