I'm thinking some sort of amalgam might happen. Integrating characters into mainstream DCU.
Flashpoint
There's a fissure in time that is leaving repercussions in the past, present, and future. Barry Allen must find the Flashpoint before it destroys all time.
Off My Mind: Will the DC Universe Be Rebooted Again After Flashpoint?
@Out_of_Space said:As long as DC is ran by Didio, Jim Lee and Johns they will try as much stunts to attract more readers. Comics have gone away from the quality I once believed the mainstream was going to, now only few comics really have substance. We can blame whoever we want, but the real problem is that the industry does not have the foundation it is suppose too. Less people read comics now and those who do read vary in their ability to enjoy the medium in its maximum potential. I know this too be true when I can only read the Grant Morrison Batman stuff and supply incite no other reviewer on the comicvine really does... or few at least. Then there are those who read all the Batbooks and need others to explain the layers. They need to change something but not rebooting the whole DC Universe.exactly!
Comics are more then just pictures and words or just pretty storyboards. Comics is a language of its own and like any language there are levels of depths of comprehension. DC seems to want to reboot since they know most readers are like Dan Didiot, who has a shallow understanding of the potential of comics. Most people will not read something like Alan Moore's Tomorrow stories and if they do would they understand how it pushed the medium once again?
The change must be in readers and the industry.
They need to end up stupid things like time travelling and especially comics in the future, mainly Legion of Heroes... it's ridiculous knowing some of the stuff that happens as I think it somehow limits the present comics (example: the war of the Green Lanterns has been reflected on future events, especially now that Mogo is done for). Second they need to kill the most of the Flash family. Sorry Flash fans but all these time-travelling speedsters are messing things up and in my opinion end up being silly heroes in comparison to others.
Fourth: No reboot. Make wave for new heroes and villains and for the rise of young ones such as supergirl, superboy and red robin. An event like DC Universe Online in which normal people get juiced up would be perfect. Sort of a reverse Marvel's House of M.
Fifth: If the Superman and Wonder Woman runs are weak, inovate. POWER DOWN SUPERMAN. He is the ultimate powerhouse and yet has a lack of substance as a character. This would also let Supergirl and Superboy rise up to the new tier I mentioned in number 4. Give Lois a deadly decease and make him do a deal with a demon like Trigon to spare her life in exchange for the power down and in the process make him more human. Wonder Woman needs to make war as the warrior she is but a diferent kind of war: a cultural one.
Themycira is does not only teach Amazons to be warriors it teaches them art and culture. Like Batman went Incorporated, Wonder Woman and Superman need to go global to teach the morality that made them create the Justice League.
In short, ever since I heard about what Flashpoint was I've been pissed at DC for afecting continuity for a silly character as the Flash but I tolerated it. With the possibility of a Reboot, they have seriously pissed me off... because I only became a regular reader 2 years ago. It's not DC that needs to make it easy for new readers to jump in, it's the new readers that have to catch up like I did. Comics should not be a continuous loophole. They need to be ever evolving.

@War Killer: I'm with you. I'd love to see the entire DC Universe rebooted. Why not? It's not like the hardcore fans will walk away. They may say they will but we all know WE won't. I would actually buy MORE DC Comics if this went down.
I agree with you- as one of those hardcore DC fans I think I would be okay with a reboot. It would give the DC a shot in the arm with new readers, and it would give me new variations on characters that I already enjoy. Bring on the lasting Flashpoint repercussions! I'm ready.
I doubt that it'll warrant a reboot. It'll just bring along more retcons and continuity changes, IMO. But I don't see a complete reboot happening.
SOMETHING will change, I think we can be sure of that. No event comic ends with a complete status quo, somebody is always dead, displaced, or some bit of geography has been changed.
So ive found out whats going to happen after Flashpoint:

1) In my opinion, if Flashpoint continues past the mini in any way, shape, or form, then I'll view it thusly: DC's Flashpoint = Ultimate Marvel.
I thought the DC's Earth One books = Ultimate Marvel
I actually like that idea. I don't know why, but to have everything just start anew would be pretty awesome. New origin stories, new looks, new challenges for characters and maybe some new enemies. It would really bring out some interesting ideas and stories.
No way. There is absolutely no chance in hell that the DC Universe is going to be rebooted. If so, the publishers at DC Comics are more stupid than I'd ever realise. A whole new generation of fans has been following the post Crisis on Infinite Earth timeline and DC wouldn't sacrifice these readers just to possibly appeal to some new readers. There are more cons than pros in rebooting the DCU. Another reason is that characters like Batman and Green Lantern are at their peak popularity and DC wouldn't just cut stories like Batman Inc off in the middle of their granduer.
Having said that, it is suspicious how all major titles are wrapping up their stories in August. Something big is going to happen but hopefully not a reboot. Does everyone remember how badly people took Heroes Reborn and Spider-Man: One More Day? Sales may have spiked but everyone was pissed off with what had been done. DC will hopefully have learnt from Marvel's mistakes. Basically everything I've said here and more is in this link. It has some good perspectives on this rumour: http://uk.comics.ign.com/articles/117/1170518p1.html

I'm calling it now, Captain Thunder and the SHAZAM agents are sticking post flashpoint, also a bigger push for Cyborg.
DC didn't stop with the Atom and Mera after blackest night and Barganza said that they would be the breakout stars.
This is so idiotic that it sounds JUST LIKE what the suits at dc would do. You know their mentality, if it ain't broke break it. If they want to continue their Flash Point dress up game, then fine do so. But it would make zero sense to deprive me of the actually good DC titles I enjoy reading. Enough of the rebooting. Crisis on Infinite earth's should've been the first and last one they company had. How about we lay off the monthly events and just tell great finite, title contained stories. You know, like when comics were good.@War Killer said:
@G-Man:
Eventually things return to the status quo. There is no need to get in an uproar when a character goes through a major change. Can we be in an uproar BECAUSE things always return to the status quo
My bad.
"Final Crisis of Infinite Flashpoint Earths - BLACKEST Birthright of Secret Origins 52"
Renamed the massive reboot storyline just for you!
In Flashpoint #5, Flash gives up his marriage so Neron can set the world right.LMAO
It could change a few things but there's no way everything will change. Professor Zoom has been changing things in the past since he returned, bringing back Barry Allen, killing Barry's mother and other things. I think a few more things might get changed or might get changed back but it will mostly relate to the Flash I imagine.
I could see it being a bit more like Mutant X which was supposed to be a 12 issue miniseries but continued on long after it was supposed to end.....but then it went terrible.
I don't buy into the whole big numbers scare people off narrative. If someone wanted to read Superman or whoever, they would. A new #1 every few years is not going to get a whole mess of people to finally get interested. I started reading comics in the middle of Infinite Crisis (05-06) and what attracted me was the endless stories and the interconnecting universe that never seemed to end. Yes it was a lot to take in, but I did my research. That means I used the internet and I wasn't confused after awhile. I started with Crisis on Infinite Earths and made my way through, making sure I read the first trade of a book first. A little research goes a long way.Everything you said. I'm beyond sick of the asinine statement that people make saying "Big Numbers" scare people!!! Get out of here with that foolishness. When I first began buying comics in a weekly format again about 3 years ago I could care a less about that. I went to the store and I bought characters I was interested in. Issue number had nothing to do with it, all I needed to know was where was a good place to start. I found a story arc, did a little research to understand the prior info I'd need via older readers, the net, and dived in. Making new number ones and scrambling numbering is idiotic and stupid. And all this "everyday man", new reader crap is also total gobshite. Guess what, they don't exist!!! Like you said these people are drawn in by films, shows, toons, etc. and even then their percentage of the market is so minuscule that they're not even worth pursuing. Especially if their courtship comes at the expense of alienating longtime readers. You have a 99% chance of getting a current reader to read a new title. But you have a 1% chance of having a non-reader suddenly say "I heard Dc's rebooting their titles/Superman/Batman is at issue 1/etc." I'm totally going to buy comics now. I'm a good example of the "man on the street" but even I had been exposed to toons/movies/games/collected toys/and heavily read comics as kid. I went to the local comic shop really to look at toys and I was at first confused when I went to the display of titles. I had no idea which Spidey, Batman, X-Men title I should be reading. I mean there was so much! But guess what, I read old trades that were recommended and then I had authors who I trusted. So when I started going to the shop I'd buy trades, chat it up with the other guys and staff there and ask them about ongoing stories. I asked what was good and similar to the works of authors I had come to enjoy. Next thing you know I now have a pull list and have caught up on most of the continuity I missed from about 99/00-08. No gimmicks, no reboots, no pandering got to me here. Great writing past and present, personal dedication, and a genuine love of the medium has created the loyal reader before you now.I have also been to stores with friends who dont read comics, they seemed to just pick up whatever looked cool, issue number be damned. They were probably a little confused but I think the problem was that it was in the middle of a story, not that it wasn't a #1. I think comics should start advertising storylines on their covers. Superman #900, but here's the start of a new story and if you like it there are 4 more parts to get.Anyway, if Flashpoint is the beginning of an "Ultimate" DC line, awesome, but making these characters the main universe would just be confusing. "I know who Superman is, but who the heck is this?" This is not a new beginning, this is more additions to a longer story because to understand Flashpoint, like any alternate universe, you need to have knowledge of the original universe to really understand the weight of the story and the changes to the character. It's not like the Flashpoint universe is the Wildstorm universe or a completely unconnected world of characters, it is simply a darker version of the "real" characters. If DC has any sense they could build this out to be a new line of books, but not replace the old ones. Lets face it, 90% of comic book readers are the loyal nerds who know the ins and outs of continuity (myself included) this whole "every day person" thing is such a small part of the market that they are nearly none existent. Bring in new readers with tv shows, movies and cartoons, not slapping the majority of your readership in the face for the sake of some made up statistic the business uses to explain why people just don't read as much as they used to. That being said, I am excited for Flashpoint and I think the ending of storylines in August is just part of the gimmick.
Did we not already have a reboot when Infinite Crisis ended? If this wipes out that crappy event I'll take it.
I think Flashpoint should have been at least 12-issue miniseries like Crisis on Infinite Earths. 5 is too short though.
All I have to say is I started reading flash and got pulled into flashpoint, I really loved the issues, but after flashpoint my mind was blown!
I only got into comics a little over a year ago and yeah seeing numbers like 900 and 800 on them can be a little intimidating but what's worse is it's so hard to figure out which events actually happened in the continuity you're reading. If they're going to reboot it then COMPLETELY reboot it. None of this this 'oh this, this, and this never happened now' and then 12 issues later being like 'oops my bad that second one, yeah that still happened' or 'actually that third one happened except without this part'. I'm not saying everything needs to change. In fact I'd be kind of upset if somethings did change, I mean you can't make Batman all sunshine and rainbows, just stick with the changes. You can change the origins or setting or costume whatever, just keep the essence of the character, especially of the major players.
Why are they always messing with the time stream, "side gripe" why are guys like Kyle Rayner, Wally West, Roy Harper on even Garth getting a raw deal while Dick Grayson is constantly evolving.
3 of those guys you mentioned have been very much under the thumb of Geoff Johns who has a hard on for their predecessors
For the possability of rebooting the entire DCU--I SAY THEE NAY!!!!!! NO, NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT, NOT GONNA HAPPEN, PEOPLE PLEASE HELP ME MAKE THIS NOT HAPPEN, I'M BEGGING YOU!
I keep saying this over and over, and I'm saying it once again: even if Flashpoint (and by extent, Marvel's Fear Itself) ends and things go back to normal, I now DEMAND that the Big Two take my word of advice...and it'd be great if someone here would forward this for me to the Big Two:
TAKE A LONG, LONG BREAK FROM DOING BIG EVENT STORIES. FOR A WHILE. NO MORE FOR A WHILE. DO TWO TO THREE-ISSUE STORIES, DO ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVELS, BUT JUST NO MORE BIG EVENT STORIES (OR MINI-EVENT STORIES IN CERTAIN TITLES) FOR A LONG, LONG TIME! MAYBE EVEN DRAW UP FINALIZED, UNALTERABLE GROUND RULES FOR CONSTRUCTING BIG EVENT STORIES, SUCH AS HAVING THEM DONE ONLY EVERY FOUR YEARS, SIMILAR TO THE WAY THEY DO THE OLYMPICS. THAT IS ALL I ASK. HEED THIS ADVICE. THINK ABOUT IT. TAKE YOUR TIME. PLEASE.
If they reboot DC comics then its a rest for me for buying comics from DC for a while then jump on the re imagining of the characters. Hey if this happens at least its for the better because it could of been worse such as DC comics going out of business or finally chuting down on these characters that we come to know and love. Marvel and other publishers will be here and I will be getting them still but just not DC if they start all over. If they all start over than at least its for the sake of new generations of audiences.
I might consider collecting Batman again if this were to happen, but it won't. DC should consider branching off with a separate universe like Marvel did only with another name.
Flashpoint Comics wouldn't be a bad idea.
I doubt it... this is just something like "Age of Apocalypse" or "House of M" (though this IS something you don't see happening much in the main DC Comics universe though, interestingly enough). I'm sure somethings will be tweaked here and there when reality shifts back to normal... but I doubt they'll do a full-scale reboot.
They may shunt this reality off to one of the 52 Alternate Earths though.
Even if DC did do this, would this affect titles that take place in the future....like Batman Beyond (the ONLY DC title I'm currently collecting at the moment) for example?
Oh well I just subscribed to the flashpoint main series, superman(3 issues), batman(3 issues) and wonder woman(3 issues) only because they are very short but I'm not a super big DC person so if flashpoint lasts for like half a year to a full year won't kill me as long as it does return to the norm
Flashpoint might be a nice break from main continuity
Absolutely they should "reboot". The major titles have been forced into ever increasing levels of desperation in gimmickry to keep things going as it is (Batman Inc, etc). The new EIC is known for his "back to basics" approach to comic book properties, and I think this would serve DC well. It's time for a new "Man of Steel" mini, a new "Dark Knight". It's time to stop with the Ranbow Lantern Corps nonsense.
It's time to start over and give DC fans back the characters they knew and loved, not the tortured, twisted caricatures that so many of them have become.
