Smiley button gets thrown loose and falls down a drain, the long he is separated the less power he has and slow starts to revert to an inanimate button. With what power he has left he rolls back towards Ernie.

Lady Death continues to battle waking nightmares as Purgatori torments her.

The Doctors arrive at Neurotech and find the wrecked remains of the dream-probe as well as the nurse who pinned the button onto the dead Earnest who tells them the story of how when Ernie resurrected he couldn't stand the screams of dying patients. Price takes from this that Ernie is sound sensitive and his telepathy combined and drive him to kill is neighbors as well as his family.

Ernie's power fades due to his separation from Smiley. It seems that both need each other in order to function. Ernie takes down his attacker just as Smiley rolls into view, now totally reverted to pin button form. Pinning him to his jacket restores them both and Lady death appears and admonishes Ernie for his carelessness and gives button an energy boost.
