In this story, we find two main developments:

    1. the origin of Two-Edge
    2. the battle between Humans and Elves

    Who is Smelt?

The origin of Two-Edge is told from his mother Winnowill's perspective. She remembers a time before her healing powers were ever used to inflict disease. She found Smelt, son of Guttlekraw the Troll-King abandoned to die after a Troll-skirmish. She nurses him into full constitution, and somehow falls in love with him.

While Smellt revocers, she develops her plan:

"Learn what he wants most and give it to him then create another need and fulfill that". So Winnowill first healed Smelt, then lavished him with jewelled treasures, and finally create the need to have her body.

Two-Edge was born not long after. He was raised by Winnowill, who kept him in a thorn-barred cell, and when Smellt tried to rescue and foster the Child, she killed him.

Rayek walks into Winnowill's lair as soon as she finishes telling the story, and instantly becomes her zombie-servant, employing himself on commission with Egg.

    Humans v. Elves

Redlance the tree shaper creates traps that mean peril for the advancing humans. Dart reach the forest in time to reinforce Treestump. At this point in the series, it is an all out surge to rescue Dewshine. This became a great victory for the Wolfriders, and secured Dart's reputation as a proven field-general and chief in later series.

The enemies are the Human tribes outside Blue Mountain, and the Gliders Chosen Eight (which is like 10 in elf counting) reduced to SIX, sleeping in Petalwing's wrapstuff cocoons.

With Cutter and Adar, on the inside, they are able to lead all of the humans who were once-servants of Winnowill's. Cutter explains that these humans must appeal to their tribemates and no longer serve Winnowill.
