When a film has a production budget of $50 million, but it's domestic total gross is a mere $13 million (total worldwide gross of $32.7 million), it's pretty safe to call that a box office disaster. And unfortunately, regardless of the fact that Dredd featured some of the most incredible slow motion action special effects of any film in the last year,it did absolutely horribly at the box office. Which is why it's so interesting that this film that really did not do very well at all, has gone on to top both DVD and Blu-Ray sales charts as well as digital downloads.

    No Caption Provided

Earlier today Lionsgate revealed that the Dredd went on to sell over 650,000 units and that it "accounted for nearly 50% of week 1 POS at retail." So although the film did very poorly at the box office, it did make up in its sales performance overall, which is a really good thing.

    == TEASER ==
[Lionsgate] announced today that the home entertainment release of DREDD claimed the number one spot on the DVD sell-through and Blu-ray charts with 650,000 units sold, making it the best-selling new release title of the year. Blu-ray units accounted for nearly 50% of week 1 POS at retail. In addition, the critically acclaimed thriller, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as the titular character Judge Dredd, was the top film download for the week, outpacing all other titles in digital sales as well.

Not only is this great news for Lionsgate, but it also signals that there is a home video audience for this type of a movie, even though it performed poorly at the box office. Perhaps there is still hope yet for Dredd to make back what it cost to make.

What did you think of Dredd? Did you enjoy the film? Were you one of the few people to see it in theaters? Did you check out the DVD and Blu-Ray? Let us know what you think and if you enjoyed the film in the comments below!

Good because its awesome, the amount of people i have made watch my copy already is nearly double figures. Its a solid more adult targeting comic based film and there isn't many of thoose apart from Kick Ass and Blade's.

Saw it at the cinema first week of release and really really enjoyed it. And I bought it a few days after retail release and I've been telling all my friends about it. I think it suffered from poor marketing but what the hell do I know?

This is not only the best 2000 AD film it's also a great action dystopic movie and I hope that the DVD/Blu-Ray sales are enough to warrant a sequel.

    That's great news :D

Though I had to laugh: " making it the best-selling new release title of the year." Would sound impressive, if it wasn't the third week in January.....

I watched it on demand through Amazon and it was awesome. It definitely would have made my top 10 list of movies from last year if I'd seen it last year.

It had flaws but overall it was a good, fun movie. It's very similar to blade or hellboy in that respect. I would highly recommend it to anyone, particularly non-comic book fans who otherwise wouldn't watch it

Brilliant, I'm over in the UK and saw it twice at the cinema and bought it on Blu-ray on day of release. I am so hoping that world wide sales are sufficient to get this film a sequal.

I knew this was going to be the case. It is far too good to be overlooked forever. The story, though vague, was direct enough to submerse an audience in the immediate happenings, while also alluding to future plot devices (i.e. mutants, corrupt judges, Dredd’s background). There will be a sequel, I have no doubt…I just can’t wait for it.

It was a great movie, but Dredd just isn't a popular enough character to support a movie like this in my opinion. This goes to show that single movies based on the Flash, AquaMan, MMH, could have negative effects for DC if they chose to go the same way as Marvel.

The movie could be well written and awesome, but if nobody cares enough about the characters.....they won't go see it to begin with.

To compare those movies to Dredd is ridiculous. Those are original screenplays and were groundbreaking for their time.

Dredd was good, but it wasn't even a fraction of how good Star Wars and Matrix were. But I suppose time will tell. If Dredd end up grossing more than Star Wars in BluRay sales....I stand corrected. :P

Dredd was rated 18a and couldn't even reach out to its major audience-kids! It was a good script to us comicbook fans, but to appeal to everybody? Dredd needed a lot of work to become a huge success.

I wasn't comparing the films I was comparing the level of recognition, nobody ever knows who the characters are in orginal movies yet that never stops them from being a success.

Judge Dredd has never in his entire existence been aimed at kids, the film, 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine are all aimed at adults

This movie was incredible. Like I said in a post on another thread, Dredd was my second favorite comic book movie only falling short to Batman. Hopefully these DVD/blu ray sells might warrant a sequel.

It's a shame this movie didn't do better in theaters. In was a great comic film. I was really hoping to see a sequel an maybe eventually Judge Death. But alas, I don't think it's going to happen unfortunately.

This was hands down my favorite movie of 2012. Saw it in theatres and have re-watched it at least 6 times at home and have been recommending it heavily to most everyone I know. I blame the memory of the old film and Rob Schneider for so few people actually going out to see it.

OK, first off-- Star Wars was hardly original, case in point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hidden_Fortress#Influence

Second, Dredd was amazing-- both intensely entertaining and a super interesting film about the nature of justice.

Third, the major audience for Dredd is not kids-- Judge Dredd is not, and never should be, a film directed towards an audience younger than 18.

    Alright, I can breathe again.

I think this is more a reflection of the changing movie market. I have a large TV in my living room with a Blu-ray player. Why go to a theater pay large ticket prices, and have to deal with rude people talking or chomping on food? I can just wait to watch movies in the comfort of my home in high-def.

I also wonder if calling it DREDD 3D hurt it? I know when I see 3D in a title my interest drops dramatically.

Congratulations on your article being highlighted on Reddit, Sara.

Great movie in the theater. From what I've been hearing it seems the box office disaster was due tot he fact of Stallone's association to this movie because of him playing the central role in the 1995 film and that just turned people away. Way I see it, the movie is getting its just desserts now at this point. Go Dredd!

I saw the movie and enjoy it. I was looking at the wikipedia and saw the gross number and was shocked. I refresh the page and say what. Anyways, I hope there's a squeal "At the London Film and Comic Con in July 2012, Garland said that a North American gross of over $50 million for Dredd would make sequels possible and that he had plans for a trilogy of films. A second film would focus on the origins of Dredd and Mega-City One, and a third would introduce Dredd's nemeses, the undead Judge Death and his Dark Judges. In August 2012, Garland said that a Judge Dredd television series would be a positive future step for the series. In September 2012, Garland said that he would explore the "Origins" and "Democracy" storylines, would introduce characters Judge Cal and Chopper, and would pursue the concept that Judge Dredd is a fascist. Also in September, Macdonald said that further films would be made in partnership with IM Global and would likely be shot in South Africa.[" wikipedia and thought it would be cool on what happen. I know happen, but I like to watch on a movie what happen and the "big lie".

@k4tzm4n: This animation is almost creepy - you don't want to look but you can't help ... look away... look awa...y

There's been a few comparisons of this movie to others - and to set this straight - the closest and best adaptation to a comic in the same genre would be .... THE CROW .... and only the BRANDON LEE movie! Same tone, pacing, and action (The Crow did have a slightly better story though - at least the original (( all the others we don't like to talk about them)).

Kick-Ass is not a good comparison at ALL. Different methodology for storytelling, humor, the only successful comparison you could make is how faithful an adaptation they were to their comic book counterparts - that's it.

And to set things straight - PLEASE STOP Comparing DREDD to - ANY of the BLADE films - They were total garbage - I had high hopes, each time I went to the next film hoping and praying they would improve - Wow was I disappointed and it Certainly KILLED Wesley Snipe's career ( a long with some tax evading ).

Best DREDD adaptation without question. Great Tone, evironments, pacing, good story (not great but better than every other Crow movie that's followed the original by far ! ), good acting, action and cinematography.

I watched in the Theaters and enjoyed it! so I bought it on Blu-Ray on Release!

The Digital Comic extra would be my only complaint - and only that I would have like to have seen it incorporated into the live action part of the film! - it was well worth the further development of one of the characters (not going to spoil it).

Definitely suffered from some very poor marketing and promotion - shame on Lionsgate.

This movie is a winner and worthy of a sequel - GIVE US - DEATH !!!!!

    JUDGE that is!

This film was amazing. The story was simple but good. The action wasn't ridiculously over-the-top but still awesome. Just a great movie.

I like this story. I didn't get to catch Dredd in the theater because with 2 kids it's hard to catch every movie I want to see. I finally got to watch it the other night on Directv Cinema and I did really like it. It was an awesome movie and really makes me think about going back and looking for some Judge Dredd trades.
