The Tokyopop Digimon Tamers manga is an adaptation of the TV series Digimon Tamers, which is the third of the six Digimon TV series. In the US, it is commonly referred to as the third season. Digimon Tamers presents the Digimon franchise in a real-world franchise, structuring its world so that Digimon is already a popular children's franchise with cards and video games when real Digimon begin appearing in the real world. The main characters and their partners are Takato and Guilmon, Rika and Renamon, and Henry and Terriermon. The story begins when Takato finds a mysterious Blue Card among his Digimon cards, scans it into his card reader, and that card reader is transformed into a Digivice. He then scans a picture of a Digimon he made up, Guilmon, and Guilmon becomes real. From there, Takato encounters Rika, Henry, and their partners, and the three of them work on dealing with the increasing number of Digimon that are coming into the real world. Accompanied by some of their friends, they eventually go into the Digital World to try to stop the problem, and there they find an even greater threat that threatens the safety of both worlds.
This manga greatly compresses the events of a fifty episode television series into four volumes. As such, the story moves along at a breakneck pace and many details are glossed over or simply excised from the story. In addition to this, the English translator of the manga takes liberties with the script, regularly adding humor in places where it does not exist in the original version. Much of this humor breaks the fourth wall (i.e. Calumon proclaiming himself to be a living plot device).
