Deadpool 9
Deadpool is struggling to stay one step ahead of Vetis and also find a new body for Agent Preston.
The Good
Thankfully, the pace of this issue works perfectly as it does not feel dragged out like the previous one. Writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan's story for this issue follows Deadpool still working diligently to get Preston a body, stay one step ahead of Vetis, and move from race jokes to sex jokes. Last issue had few disappointments, but the writers have intended to escalate things with Deadpool and company.
Deadpool in this issue is starting to have a change of heart for the job that Vetis has entrusted him with. We saw last issue that DP has no problem with killing the Vetis empowered invulnerable thief, maybe because that guy was a crook, however in this issue we see Deadpool have a change in heart. After killing the Aquaman [empowered by Vetis] ripoff, we see a side of Deadpool that regrets having to kill someone who only wanted to save lives. That is really good for this series. When the writers add that kind of uncertainty within the main character's own thought process, it ultimately makes them more interesting.
I like how after Deadpool realizes that he regretted killing the Aquaman ripoff, he immediately had an ideal to counteract Vetis' mercenary job. The ending of this issue is better than the last, as we will see DP's plan come into fruition in next issue.
The artwork by Mike Hawthorne is good. After getting used to it from last issue, I'm starting to appreciate his work a little more. Albeit I still want Tony Moore back on the series, but for now Hawthorne does a good job. His style works perfectly with Val Staples' colors as the two make Deadpool look more silly than scary serious.
The Bad
One thing I disliked about this issue is that the group that stole Deadpool's organs from the last issue did not appear in this issue. That event might be a future story arc that is in the works, or maybe the next issue. However, it seemed a bit weird that the only reference made about last issue's ending was only talked about briefly in the first part of the comic. I feel a bit mislead and disappointed.
The Verdict
With the end events of this issue, it is only a matter of time before Vetis becomes history (or ashes). Deadpool is at work on a master plan and Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan did a great job on this issue with incorporating sex jokes, meaningful violence, and historical facts that ultimately made sense in the end. The artwork by Mike Hawthorne and Val Staples works perfectly for Deadpool in this part of the series, making DP look less violent but more silly in this story arc. This is a recommend issue, pick it up! 4 out of 5!
